Space Marine Shoulder Pads

I'm new to the forums and new to mini painting, so forgive me if this question is posted already.

I have a question and I was curious what other people have done.

Space marines have these big bulky shoulder pad armor. It kinda forms a half oval. Normally, you paint the inside of the oval and maybe put an emblem on the oval or something. The outline of the oval is raised, so this is normally painted a separate color. For example, the ultramarines shoulder armor is painted ultramarine blue with the raised edges being painted in gold.

My question is: How are people painting the backside of the shoulder pad? In other words, the area of the shoulder pad that connects to the torso or the bottom of the shoulder pad where the arm comes out. I've tried continuing the edge paint (gold) onto the back and bottom, but it didn't look right. I've also tried using the main color (Ultramarine blue) on the back and bottom, but I've not been satisfied with that either.

Thoughts and suggestions?

I usually continue with the gold, like you do. Usually though i give it a couple of washes of a dark color to tone it down though.

If it's a character figure I'd do as the guys above suggest but for an army piece I'd leave them the black undercoat :) Neat though! If any gold splays to that underside, cover it back over with black.

Cheers, B.

I'd paint it the main armour colour normally I think, shaded appropriately for whatever angle it sits at.
