Son\'s Of Horus Marine

I am looking to improve on my painting, I currently seem to be around the high 7\'s on average, so I am posting a link to my latest mini.

I want some good, honest criticism (i\'m a big boy I can take it). My only ask is if you are going to criticise make it constructive. If it\'s crap say it\'s crap but also say how you would improve on it if you painted it.

Thanks for taking the time to look at it.

Yours,

John.

PS. How do you get your current CMoN ranking in your signature?

OK, it\'s crap because it looks like the stuff that comes out of my butt. Fortunatlly in this case that is intentional and is due to the color scheme. Good job. I would have liked to have seen more highlights on the black areas between the armor plates as these are what gave it a 7 instead of an 8 from me.

As for the ranking, on your \'Add/Edit\' page near the top it tells you your ranking with an HTML thingie for adding the ranking IMG to whatever. Just copy and paste to show the world.

Very impressive, I like the colour choice and shading. I copied and blew this one up to get a detailed look.
One point is the rusty colour an ink wash, as it looks a little random, and heavy in places:D I give it a 8.2, because I like it, as it immediately made me want to look closer,
You need to have 5 minis with over 50 votes on each to get a ranking, so keep posting!!!
If you need any further help PM me.

I agree with both the comments above.

Also the mud looks alittle like a ink wash and imo looks alittle like rust, if thats what you wanted great but doesnt seem like mud to me, maybe its the photo.

all in all a great mini and a 7.5 keep up the good work!

Yeah a bigger (not super big) pic would be helpful - maybe not to your scores, but if you want comments for improvement it helps if we can see the work properly.
I think you need to take your highlights up a few notches (yes it feels a little unnatural at first, but look at the best looking figs and you will almost always see the extreme contrast).

Great, I see you found your rating!!!
You could half that if you do a few great jobs like this one,

Your a very good painter, just spend a bit more time on each one, something I find very difficult:D

nice mini! perhaps a little over the top but not too detrimental.

what kinda killed my first impression was your graphic. the jaggies are very amateurish and influence my impression of the mini. only a second closer look showed my first impression to be false. i\'m sure other people may judge too quickly.

and just as a composition thing for future photos, i think it pays to give a little more headroom to the guys.

well it\'s feedback, don\'t know if thats the sort you were after but like you said, your a big boy. :D

not a right lot to add to the above comments overall a very nice bit of work....

couple of things to watch out for as I am also a victim of this. when you discover a good new technique for weathering or damage first figure out how to achieve like you obviously have. Then figure out how to apply it..
by that I mean look at some 9+ pieces as well as real life reference. see how to apply it to add a forced realism..Atthe moment while the technical skills involved to complete the model are strong there is a little on the aesthetic side letting it down. The weathering goes all over the place and rather than tying the whole image of the model together it draws the eye all over the place and makes it too busy to really appreciate what is going on..
really good work and a couple of tweaks and a little rethnk before applying effects will greatly improve score and ranking...

good luck and keep em coming.
