Something funky...

Not so recently my fav games/comic shop quite carrying Games Workshop products due to the flux in price and not in sales. It\'s understandable considering the size of the shop and the interest in this area. Anyway, the owner and I are friends, so when he decided to purge the store he sold me 52 bottles of paint and the rack for $32 american. :p

Anyway, the point is the brown wash that I\'ve been using is thick from useage (not that weird) and started to smell like old milk(that\'s the funky part). Has anyone had this with any of their paints, washes, inks, etc... Or is this just some strange occurance? ???

I notice New Vallejo Smells funny, but I wonder if that was just because it was shipped to me in a hot truck...

hmmmm..... i know paint smells wierd to begin with and washes have always smelled odd to me but i never remember my washes getting thick at all, maybe the bottle was left open to long or for long periods of time or maybe its just a bad batch, beats me. ive had paint i think that seemed to go on a little bit different but i wasnt sure if it was a inconsistency in the mini, paint or primer.

I have a bottle of GW Brown Wash that has the same issue with the funky smell - not the thickness issue though. Mine is from the old flip-top bottle days.

Phew...

The reason it is thick is because I used to leave the bottle open and paint straight from that. I\'ve since learned better than that and used the cut off pieces from the porches I build as palettes. I also use them to primer and seal my mini\'s. The\'re pretty cheap considering the homeowner buys the lumber and can\'t use the left over pieces because the\'re so small.:D

:sniff: :sniff:....nope can\'t smell nuffink

Hmmm...my GW washes are really, really, really old. They are in dropper bottles, so I just dib out the amount I want and then the lid goes back on. Vallan the lid on yours must\'ve been of for absolutely ages for a watery wash like that to thicken up!

Well done for getting the paints BTW - sounds like a good deal :D

yeh, I don\'t think it would go thick..Do you think that you might of mixed paint into it when you were mixing washes or the like?

Stuff will grow in paint, fungus or bacteria.
Maybe one or the other is responsible for the smell.

I use toothpicks to draw out the washes and mix them into the paint, and I don\'t use the same toothpick for both. The brown wash in question is GW with a blue fliptop, I don\'t know how old it is.

It may be the bacteria that has caused this blood clot looking thickness in the bottle.

Now I recently opened my GW Flesh Wash which I hadn\'t used for six or more months. That had congealed like clotting blood but was still usable when thinned.
In order to thin it out again I\'ve added a little washing up liquid and filtered water. This has given me a screw top bottle of ink I can use again. (But I don\'t know when I\'ll use it next.)
As for the smell I\'ve always found the inks to have a strange smell, and if you don\'t rinse out your brushes properly and put them in your mouth to get the point back ---- well the taste is disgusting!:|~

You mean to say that other people don\'t??

I thought this was a standard thing amongst mini painters, I have had this bad habit for years and during my time as a painter I must admit that the best tasting paint I have come across has been the Tamiya paints (something to do with teh alchohol content maybe), and the worst has to be enamels which was one of the reasons I switched to Acrylics years ago:D

Must admit though it isn\'t nice in coffee and yes the brush has gone into my coffe cup by mistake on occassions:(

Brush licking.

This is perhaps the most integral part of mini painting. A quick suck of the brush to give it it\'s point (preferably when clean) and it\'s good to go! Keeps the tip pointed and moist. In fact, if I sometimes get paint too far up the brush, I quickly slosh it about in the water cup, then do some good sucking swooshing to dislodge any more. Ok, now this is sounding weird lol

same thing happens when you mix you\'re own washes. I have no clue what causes it, though I\'m pretty sure it\'s not fungus. I used to think it\'s because it was sitting there in a small container in open sunlight, and maybe it was just the fumes. I do know however that it does NOT mean that it\'s going bad. It is a kick in the family jewels when it your favorite mini smells like old cheese (brings a whole new meaning to GW\'s smelly primer though).

I do use this to my advantage though, a smelly Great Unclean one adds a new demension to mini painting. The smell does go away, however, when you use a matt/gloss varnish on it.

common scents

Paints especially inks don\'t do it for me, in fact I find that I get a headache if I inhale too many fumes from the GW inks...nasty stuff.

Maybe I\'ll ask my girlfriend to let me use her Elizabeth Arden perfume on my next miniature just for good measure.

Seriously though, I find that licking brush tips inhibits good paint & ink flow because saliva clogs the bristles. Perhaps I\'m just being too anal\'ey retentive?

Best wishes to you all for 2004:)
