Slowing Warmachine to a crawl

Hi PP players.

After collecting and playing Warmachine and Hordes for a while, I can honestly say that if you want your game to last for hours, take lots of infantry. Especially infantry that uses lots of template weapons, like Protectorate Deliverers.

I\'ve had 500 point games with lots of infantry that lasted twice as long as 750 point games.

Sorry. Just a brief rant. :D

Is Warmachine fun??? Rather, is it fun at smaller point levels... like 2 jacks + some infantry per team...

Well, most of us got our starts with the beginning army boxes, which are about 300-320 points (warcaster + 2-4 jacks.)

The answer: yes!!! It is much more fun at low point values than the other tabletop game that we had been playing locally was.

As you use template weapons more often, you get faster at figuring scatters out.

As to it being fun? Absolutely. I play several games a week, at varying point values.

Battle box games are definitely the quickest (and you don\'t even have to buy the rule book(s) to play them, because the boxes come with quick-start rules -- all you need to get started).

Most tournaments in LGS\'s will be at the 500 point level (starter box plus one or two units of infantry, most commonly).

Then you get people like me, who really enjoy huge battles that will probably last for hours, with 750 or 1000 (or even 1500) points.

Noone else at my LGS has enough to field a full 2000 points, yet, so I\'m S.O.L. on that score. For now. I\'ve got 2250 available.

I like the mini\'s.
I haven\'t played a RL game yet.
Mostly because I\'m slow at buying/painting and that I don\'t want to buy all the books, only for the redux in January 2010.

But I played several games online (check my sig) and the game is thoroughly enjoyable!

I can\'t wait to play with mini\'s that I\'ve painted.

yes it is. I played Confrontation, Rag Narok, WH40k, Infinity (okay just one game;)), DBM (historical with 16 mm Minis ), Demonworld , i had the rulebooks for VOID and Vor: The malstrom, and i can honestly say that Warmachine is the best game out there right now. It´s an extremely agressive game that centers around ressource management ( how to kick the most butts with limited assets ) and synergies ( find out how to combine miniatures, skills and magic to kick even more butts )

The normal scale is 500 or 750 points but the game can be scaled up to 2000 Points, before it slows down to much in my experience.

The battleboxes are about 300 Points. My very first Game was Khador vs. Menoth , just the battleboxes and it took us about one Hour - without reading the rules first , the guy from the shop just explained it to us during the game, and even so we had a great game ( my brother more than i did , which might have something to do with the fact that his butcher litterary ripped his way trough my heavy Jack... )

and if two jacks are enough depends on the faction as you can see on the contetnn of the battleboces , the point costs vary alot. If you play Khador , two jacks will cost at least 168 points, the jacks in the battlebox are about 260 points. Cygnar and menoth are somehow in the middle with jack costs runnig from 53 two 154 points and cryx jacks are the cheapest ones with light jacks for only 38 points (that´s why you got a whole pack of them in the box).

what i want to say: buy the battle box , two boxes of infantry and maybe a cheap solo like Gorman di wolfe or the Piper of ord and you have a nice 500 point force that can be compatible as long as your troop choice isn´t too strange - there are some \"mandatory units\" like the coir of menoth for the protectorate that most plaxers will always play.

one last word: the battle boxes don´t always contain exactly 300 points - in some boxes it might be 290, in others 310, that´s why some players need to buy one model more or les to start. also, some of the battle boxes contain weaker combinations of miniatures as others, but the game itself is balanced fairly well

I think 2nd Ed will clear this up a lot. It had become 'Infantrymachine' in recent tournaments etc (and I play Cryx, so turning up with more than a single unit of Bane Knights often had folk screaming at me that I was beardy). 2nd Ed seems to be a move back towards making Jacks useful and not just fodder for infantry.

In terms of fun. Hell yes. Since I picked up Warmachine I've struggled to enjoy any other game format. It's so much fun to play anything where army selection and tactics are such a vital component of winning.

In my area, since all tournaments are timed, showing up with even 1 unit of bane knights made people thing you trying to cheat by stalling with shadowshifts.

I'm looking forward to the end of Infantrymachine. I've always loved the warjacks.
