i had an interesting idea the other day , i havent tried it and am not sure if it would work. but i was thinking of trying to do sky to earth with ink tinted metallics, what do people think, has anyone seen any examples of this or would it simply not work

No chance!

I\'m going to be pretty forward and say that whilst you may achieve an interesting effect, you will not be able to get that sky-earth look you want.

I mentioned in another thread the mistake of thinking of metallics as being like normal acrylic paints. As they are full of flecks, you will not get the impression you want, as the flecks diffuse and reflect rather than giving a smooth, mirrored surface.

As I said, you\'ll get a nice effect and I hope to see the work soon, but I don\'t think it\'s going to work in the way you want it to :(

Not that I don\'t want it to work mind you :)

Good luck, and post the results as soon as possible.

sure

Actually, I started messing a little with it. If you look close at Argoth Hellstein, specifically the top left pic, you can see on his ribbed belt the exact effect you are striving for. Tinting metallics is really fun and I have to say that with some careful practice, you could totally pull of the effect, or at least somethign that looks very cool! BTW, sorry the pic is so bad!!! I will try more SEMM again one of these years!

I tried to do that with my GD entry last year on the 2 chaos dudes. The pic doesn\'t really show it very well.

Been there, done that, bought the T-Shirt:

The trick is to mix Vallejo\'s metal medium with opaque paints, but not the earth color. This is best seen on the armor plates on his back.

You could also try working with some of the metallic colors found in some paint lines, Gunze Sanyo has some nice ones (I use the metallic blue for my 40K eldar).

Alternately, you could also try using clear colors over your metallic, you can get some real interesting reflection effects that way.

BE CAREFUL WITH GUNZE SAGNYO

In the past I used matte varnish from gunze, but you\'ve got to be extra careful with this paint, because it can dissolve citadel or vallejo paint if not properly thinned.

THey are also water-based acrylics, but totally different than citadel of vallejo, because they dissolve the other paints, also stink a bit and are toxic if i remember correctly. I\'m not sure if they can be mixed with other paints from a different brand.

My advice is not to use them in combination with other brands.

Corvus, if you have said it last year, it will have saved my poor goblins...:(

PS: Rest in pieces, my poor goblins, Blurp!

Close, but no cigar!

Guys, good of you to post examples, but I have to say that only Chrispy\'s kind of achieved something out of those, though Kitty\'s is too small to see for sure.

I think metallics need to be three or four times as finely ground to get the correct effect.

Still, go Chrispy! Liked that piece, though it seemed more of a triumph for lightsourcing to me.

I have had no problems with Gunze Sanyo with Modelmaster or Tamiya model paints, or Liquitex artist acrylics. You will get a faster cure time if you mix them with Modelmaster, but otherwise they are compatable.

ah, okay...

Actually, what I meant with \"other brands\" was: \"those two brands: citadel and vallejo\" lol

couldn\'t it be that there are two types of acrylic paints: the non toxic ones (citadel, vallejo,...) and the stinky ones (gunze, tamyia,...)???

That was understood, I was just providing additional information for those of us that don\'t have GW or Vallejo as local options. Well, I really can get GW somewhat locally, but why drive an extra 40 minutes or so round trip when I can buy better paints closer?

BTW, my Gunze has a slight alcohol smell, but I certainly would not say they stink, this may be just different personal sensitivities to the smell. There are no toxicity warnings on the bottle (though you really shouldn\'t drink any paints, even nontoxic ones:)). Also, where did you hear that Gunze paints were so toxic?

You are correct, there are different acrylic paint formulations, with differences in the polymer used and in the solvent mix used (for those not aware, the solvent is more than just water, often contain alcohols and other adjunct materials).

You should test mix before combining brands.
