so i picked up a batalion. im thinking of giving the clanrats spears and shields, but im not sure about standards musicians and champions. (i have 2 units of 20) also i have 20 plague monks that i can ether make 20 plague monks with or 10 plague monks, and 10 censer bearers, but the same problems with musicians champions and standards... what should i do?

The best thing you can do with Skaven is have big units so as to benefit fully from the strength in numbers rule and get the combat bonus for outnumbering. It's probably a bit late now as this topic was posted over a week ago but I'd turn the clanrats into one big unit instead of two small ones. I picked up two boxes and put them together as two units of 30 and a unit of 20 slaves with slings. An extra box of Plague monks gave me two units of 30 but you could probably get away with units of 25 if you wanted the censer bearers too.

By the way if you want slings for your slaves here's a good source: http://www.grippingbeast.com/product.php?ItemID=1582

Unfortunately there's no actual picture of the slings themselves but if you remove the weapon from the right hands these slings fit rather nicely.

Big units... lots of rats ... thats the way to go with these furry fighters.

I personally would not spend the point to get a spear on the clan rats. They don't really win combat using active combat resolution(killing things), but instead rely on static combat resolution to win(rank bonus, outnumber etc).

I would say 20 is the minimum size, but you would be best to go with 25-30 per unit.

Agree with Diamonds. And most important of all for skaven, always include the bannerman. Always. A musician is a good idea as well, since really with a large unit like that, you can't afford to lost combat res. Skaven Leadership scores just can't handle it.

Another reason you want to stick with the larger units is that against enemies that use a heavy amount of ranged attacks you're more than likely going to lose a few rats. If you're whittled down to the point where you have no rank bonus, you're doomed. Also, you want to avoid those pesky panic tests for 25% unit loss in a shooting phase (I think this is still the rule?) More models means less likely to face panic tests.

25% in any phase except CC phase, as a matter of fact. And given how pesky some spells and such can be (Lore of Nurgle comes to mind), you really need those buffer rats.
