Sentinels

How do you use the sentinels in this army? I've seen them focused down rather quickly due to average morale. They seem to be especially vulnerable to cavalry as these units can get into their flanks.

Do you put attachments in there?

P.S. i mainly use Stannis and have no experience with Renly.

I've used the Sentinals a couple of times now and I don't find them anything special, cool looking models, but like you I have'nt found their niche on the Battlefield yet..

They are a good unit for Renly to sit in since he helps their moral and their offense (which is their main role). Decent bunker for Commander Daario as well as he helps their save and moral as well.

I've had success throwing Brienne into a unit of Sentinels for the +2 morale and ability to fling themselves with 10 dice hitting on 2s with Sundering (situationally anyways). They're a great unit to hurl into the thick of combat to trigger all of the "when friendly unit is attacked" or "friendly unit is destroyed" cards while also doing quite a chunk of damage while they're still on the table.

I’ve tried Bronn in my sentinels for mostly the same reasons. I think Brienne’s abilities are inherently better with the +1 and the coin bag is not required, but I have a couple concerns maybe you can help me sort out: 1) don’t know how I feel about her abilities only working against a single, predetermined enemy unit. Has this never been an issue for you? 2) I think the idea of a sacrificial unit in the Baratheon army is a decent one, especially when running Stannis with 20% of your deck triggering off of destroyed units. That being said, is turning the Sentinels into an 8-point unit the best option for this? The 10 dice at 2+ to hit is awesome, yeah, but only against that specific declared enemy. Wouldn’t your opponent just move the targeted unit out of the way/screen it? It’s not like the Baratheons have any extra movement tricks up their sleeve. The enemy should see them coming a mile away. But given your legit idea of a sacrifical unit whose job is to hit hard and die, wouldn’t Bolton Cutthroats with a stormcrow lieutenant do almost as good of a job for 6 points instead of 8? Yeah, you need the bag for that too, but a 2point savings for a unit that will throw 8-9 dice at 3+ that are vicious and maybe sundering and a vulnerable token, sounds like a decent trade to me.

I hadn't really considered Bronn, and considering Haystack's synergy with the money bags it isn't such a bad idea to put him in the unit. But, to answer your points:

1) It's never really been an issue, because either I mark the enemy commander in missions where the commander wants to be on the objective and will inherently be at risk or if else the opponent wastes time and energy in screening the unit in which case the Sentinels can go elsewhere. The +2 morale constantly is the main reason I take her, because it keeps them in the thick of it longer since a unit with 4+ armor and 5+ morale puts them on par defensively with Stag Knights. It may not be generically applicable outside my local group, but it's worked well enough.

2) I think you make some strong points here. My only real counterpoint is that while yes you could save points using Neutrals I'm not 100% sure what those saved points would go to, as my go-to Baratheon list feels rather locked.

Stannis + Stag Knights
2x Master Wardens + Wardens
Brienne + Sentinels
Walder Frey
Lady Haystack
Lord Florent

With that setup I'm not sure what 2 points might let me do, but I've yet to really dive into Neutrals yet outside of heroes.

Oh yeah, I could definitely see Brienne being a good choice for that scenario or two where the commander unit gets marked out anyway. I’ll have to remember that. Though I forget if determining the scenario comes after you’ve built your list already. I think it does.

Outside of those particular scenarios though, I actually think your 40pt list there would do better with Bronn than my 35 pt I was running him in. You have 3 NCUs and I only have 2, so you’re in a better position to actually get the coin bag. I found with only two NCUs, I’m way more likely to target the tactics, free attack, or maneuver zones over the coin. So going forward, I probably won’t take Bronn in these smaller games I’ve been playing...

I actually like your list a lot. Most people dump the stag knights, but I find them pretty fun, esp with Stannis in them. You’re right, it doesn’t have much room for revision, but here’s an option that could be fun:

- Stannis in a warden unit
- stag knights with Daario
- second warden unit with Bronn
- Cutthroats with storm crow Lt.
- same 3 NCUs

Thoughts:
Daario Stags on the charge or with tactics cards could be gross. Imagine being down to 1 rank and then playing “Hold the Line” on them combined with Daario’s order. 11 dice on 2’s with Crit Blow and Sundering, 6’s are double hits no saves. Yeesh. That enemy is probably dead. Could be cool...

Then you’ve got Bronn to add a little speed and aggression to the wardens, and the cutthroats with the Lt. will get nine 3+ dice with vicious and sundering at full ranks. Yea, you have to control the bag for these goodies to work, but with 3 NCUs and Florent, it should be doable a fair amount of the time when you really need it. Shyra makes for the ideal bag-grabber.

So this list isn’t too different model-wise but it trades a little defense on the loss of the excellent master wardens and the Sentinels/cutthroats swap, in order to boost offensive capabilties across the board. As Stannis is the more aggressive commander, this makes sense to me, but I’m just messing around with ideas for the fun of it.
