Sculpting Putty

I want to make a banner out of sculting putty. Any suggestions as to what type of putty to use, bearing in mind i am a beginner. I have used GW green stuff for a few practice attempts but it is quite expensive. Is there a good putty out there i could practice with at low cost and what would you reccomend i use for the final banner? Thanks :)

well you could try mixing some Milliput into the greenstuff (milliput is cheap but a little messy)

magisculp is cheap for the amount you get.

how about this for an idea: get some thin sheets of plasticard and 2 bowls, fill one with hot water and the other with cold. cut the banner into shape before you pit it in the water and then once in the hot water for a minute or so start making the waves and folds, then when you are happy put it in the cold water to set it back again. this can be done many times over until you get it right........and doesn\'t cost anything in putty!

Sculpy or Fimo are cheaper than green stuff. Downside is that you have to stick them in an oven to heat set/cure them.

Excellent idea with the plasticard, Medved ! I\'d go with that idea. Making flags, capes etc. can be a nightmare using green stuff or milliput. Good luck:D

I mix paint with pva glue put it on a tile fairly thick and peel it off when dry.Good for making flesh type banners too,.
To get shape spread the paint/glue mix on foil bent to shape.

Thanks for the ideas guys. The PVA and paint on a tile was great. I hope to try out the plasticard in hot water idea soon. Im not adept enough at the moment to create a good banner out of putty. To darn fiddly lol

GW green stuff
Forget about that. Get yours at the CMON shop. You\'ll get more and cheaper ;).

Here are two other possibilities for making a flag :

*) green stuff : roll out a wad of GS flat with talcum powder (or a lubricant) and a small cylinder (a pen will be fine) or flatten it with a plate of glass or a tile. Let it cure about 20 to 30 minutes then cut it to the desired shape, peel it off, and apply and fold it into the final position and shape;
*) tin/aluminum sheet : wash a soda can. Cut it open (be careful with the edges, they can easily slit your hand up), cut the desired shape, glue, bend and fold to the final shape.

mickc22: Thanks for the website links. The Heresy site is brilliant, i plan on using the \'AZAROTH, TYRANT OF THE NINTH HELL\' they have, as a bloodthirster for my army as its alot cheaper :)

Im in staffs, UK by the way

I can recommend Heresy too.

Made a similar question a while back and was given that link.

Got my order fast, well packed, and the putty was exceptionally fresh. I didn\'t even pay any postage as the order was over 20£ (it would have been anyway). :)

mickc22 and Khaylanis. You guys were right, that site has excellent prices and the delivery is well fast! Thanks for the link. My banners are progressing nicely :)

theres also a free p+p thing going on at heresy this week, because he is moving so things are little slower. superb service (always get a handwritten note with an order - who else does that?)

The section on sculpting capes works for doing banners as well.
