Sculpting flames

Hey all,
I'm trying to sculpt flames out of greenstuff onto spikes on a warhammer razordon, to make flaming spikes. I'm following a fairly basic technique (not very experienced) of pressing a cylindar onto the spike, flattening it at the end to make it stick better to the model (I'm having a bit of trouble with the GS lifting off the model) then using a tool to press lines from the base of the flame up. To finish off, I stick a spiked tool into the GS and drag it upwards for finer detail.

I'm relatively happy with the bulk of the flame so far, but having lots of trouble getting the tip of the flame to look any good. It either comes out flat, or basically pointy. Sometimes too much GS gets at the top so I twist and stretch it off, which looks ok but still not great. Any tips on finishing off the point of flames?

I think this is just one of those things that takes practice and experience to develop the right 'touch'. To help smoothing off you can try using a damp brush (you can dampen it in mineral spirits/white spirit instead of water, acts as a mild solvent to the GS).

Yeah thanks for the link! It looks like a good article for inspiration. I think my problem is I am trying to put too much fine detail in, using a pin head to drag lines, flames should be a bit thicker than that. I am also trying to make very small flames. I'll keep playing around with GS and practicing for a while I guess.
