Hi

My friend gave me a dnd model recently, as usual its a pretty basic sculpt but i really like it. The only problem is the blade looks so bad i want to make one myself. would anyone be able to give me advice or send me to a tutorial/article as i cant find one myself.

heres the mini http://www.hobbiesandgames.com/PhotoGallery.asp?ProductCode=DDAF034&PhotoNumber=2#largerphoto

thanks

Stephen

PS i cant find a suitable blade to replace it and id like it to be like the picture. thats why i want to sculpt my own

As an alternative, instead of forming blades from putty you can make them by cutting and filing from many thin plastics like plastic card. This is particularly if you don\'t want a fat blade typical of minis but something a little more in-scale.

I tend to carve and sand most of mine from scrap plastic sprue. I\'ve got a lot of it laying around though. Making blades from putty is in my opinion really only worthwhile if you\'re planning to have a figure cast.

Thanks for the replies  . im going to go with the plastic option.

the only thing im worried about now its been able to fix it to the model as its so small. going to be really tight to pin it.

Instead of pinning it, you can drill a hole in the hand, through the grip where the handle is, sort of thing. Removing the handle from the hand. THEN what you do is create your blade with and extra bit of length at the handle end to stick in that hole. Try to make it as tight a fit as possible and use some putty if there\'s any gaps to stiffen up the joint. It wont be the strongest it could be, but it should be alright, durability wise.

If you do pin it, just drill the pin BEFORE you do all the work making and finishing the blade. That way if you drill through the side it\'s no big deal, just drill another hole a quarter inch over and you\'re good to go.

What he said - just form something like the tang on a real blade. I don\'t think you need to make the fit that tight, just glue in place with epoxy and you\'re golden.
