whats a good color for rusting iron? Worst case scenario I could combine a red and brown together. But theres probably a premixed color out there someplace.

Dont\' be afraid (or rather reluctant) to mix colours! Restricting yourself to only use the paints you can get straight out of the bottle can hold you back. I often use a mix of mid brown and orange for rust.

thats probably better than brown/red I was thinking of doing. I dont have mid brown as a color. What would you say is the equivalent GW color.

I also have Earth, Cobra leather, Tan from Vallejo.

Also does anyone know of any good articles about rust patterns. I looked and didnt find anything about rust in particular.

Im thinking about rust like you would see on a battleship for example, coming from the portholes or whatnot.

I use beige brown from Vallejo Model Color. It is not very far away from bestial brown.

If you want to achieve the sort of rust that looks as if it has run down from a hole or bolt or something I\'d do it by applying several thin glazes. I\'d make sure the colour is intensified closer to the \'source\'. With thin glazes you\'ll have good control over how the outcome will be. I don\'t know if there\'s any good articles about doing this, but if you go slowly and build things up gradually you can stop anytime when you think you\'ve achieved what you\'re after.

What do you mean by glazes. If I combine bestial brown and orange it wont be a glaze as my understanding of the word is.

IMO Orange-brown form vallejo model color is great for \'fresh\' rust.. i often mix it with smoke and other colours.. besides orange brown is great and useful color :)

A variation using Citadel Colour is to use thinned down Dark Flesh this gives a good base colour for rust and then stipples of Blazing Orange and then if you want to go a little lighter a further stipple of Fiery ornge in just the ood spot looks realy effective. I mostly just go with Dark Flesh though as that for me looks realy good.

Glazing is a method, not a type of paint! If you thin down paint and apply it over a surface that\'s already painted with something else you can slowly alter the tone of what\'s already painted. It\'s similar to a wash, but yo use very little of it so that it stays stretched out over the surface and not pool in the recesses like a wash do. I hope I make sense... :innocent:

Yes Orange Brown is an excellent colour. That\'s the one I use and mix it with Beige Brown for rust.

Glaze paint exist :) I have paint called blue glaze from old citadel paints in high plastic bottles.. it is something like Vallejo transparent paints, but it shines a bit..
P.S. it is not soemthing like ink- it is much more transparent

Yes glaze paints do exist and what you describe sounds like the Tamiya clears which are more like a thick laquer than paint.
There is also glaze medium from Vellejo which you add to paint.
But in the end they all get used the same way ie the glazing technique which Ritual described so well.

I go for bestial brown for rust and apply this over the selected areas in glazes ie very thin layers of paint. Adding a touch of orange for the final touches.

I have started using the Mig weathering powders too. Excellent.

The rust there is Mig powder. The barrel scorching is scorched brown and chaos black glazes.

It would look fine, but if you were doing it in glazes i\'m guessing it would show up quite dark (as it\'s on a darker basecoat), so maybe you could mix a bit of white into the mix to compensate for this.

Earth colours are the ones you want to use - these are made from iron oxide pigments which are literally rust.

Anyway, rust varies from a light orange all the way to a dark brown depending on age and condition. I would strongly recommend you look in your area for examples of real rust and study where it forms, how it collects, the colours of fresh v. old rust and so on.

A few simple image searches online should provide you with a wide range of reference photos if you don\'t have a digital camera to take your own.

Also, those natty french painters who paint rust so well do so because they observe nature.
Bragon has some useful pics of rust and other things HERE.
