Rocks

how do you guys make rocks on the bases you do, do you use cork, paint it and drybrush it etc. Or do you put just a normal rock on a base, or is there is a certain material that excels over all the others.

I personally use cork for large rock bases that have a miniature standing on the rock, usually base it in blue-black, overbrush with a few coats of lighter and lighter greys, then glaze it with the blue-black again. I have some normal rocks for use on bases as decoration too though.

To be honest and with respect to the artists that use it, I\'m not very happy with this current cork trend. It was okay the first couple of times, but it\'s starting to be really overused. And the overuse just makes it more obvious that it\'s cork.

I have heard people praise Oak bark as a pseudo-rock.

I\'m having fun this week making molds of rocks that I\'ve found lying around. The advantage of casting plastic/plaster rocks is that you can easily drill holes in them for pinning... I need a ton of rocks for a current diorama project, and nothing beats casting your own.

I used regular pine bark at one point as evidenced in this tutorial:

Lately, I\'ve been using a lot of cork so I\'m in the overuse camp at the moment. Why? Only because it\'s quick and easy. I\'ve also used small appropriately shaped rocks, as well as chips from bricks.
