Review of the Haley Painting Video

I am curious if anyone picked up the Haley Painting Video? I have been a huge fan of her work and her Fiannas back in the day made me want to be a better painter. I know her video is in the same style as the Natalya video. I was very diapointed in the amount of information (or lack there of) and how to in that video and I fear this one might be the same way.

Natalya's video is actually quite full of information, but as mentioned before is not going to be helpful if you do not have a very good grasp of paint and paint behavior already, since she primarily demonstrates rather than talks. Quite a number of non-English speakers actually find her video more informative because of this.

Jen's is naturally more loquacious and has considerably more theory in her videos; it's not surprising since they are after all, completely different people with different techniques for both painting and teaching.

I have both the Natalya and Jen Haley videos (downloded rather than physical) and Chern pretty much hits the nail on the head.

The Natalya video is more 'tutorial by observation' and personally I think it's very good.

The Jen Haley video is (so far - I've not watched it all yet) very much more traditionally instructional - Jen has so far gone into a fair amount of very clear detail about the painting technique. So far this one is also very good.

Given the money for both I'd say buy both (i did after all ;) ). Given the money for just one I'd probably say buy the Jen video, bear in mind I'm still a complete newb painter, and this is just my opinion.

Jen and Natalya is very different painters, interesting to se, if you are intermediate or advanced i say you dont learn anything new here, and! its all in comic style of painting, remeber that!
I picked up a couple of things that i didnt think of but other from that i see this as inspiration rather than education, i have been painting a little more than a year (3 hours everyday).
I would go for Jens vid since her technic is more traditional, Natalyas is hard to follow since she is mixing right on the palette fast and with sensation. But hey check both out if you like painting!

There is always more to learn. The best skill one can develop with natalia's dvd is that of self analysis through comparison. Or spot the difference to use a simpler term. What you spot and learn, or not, will depend on you, not the dvd.

I got Natalyas dvd with one main intention - to watch one of my favourite painters work on a model in full. Agreed, it would be great with more talking, explanation and no music, but I got what I wanted from it totally.

I haven't purchased Natalyas but i did buy Jen's. Im waiting for it now in the mail. I have bought 1 other Hot Lead. So far, Ive been put to sleep by it (his voice is so mellow >< ) and have been annoyed by the same repetitive music between each section. I hope its not the same. >< There is some great info! Just repetitive music gets to ya, if you hear the same bit ever few minutes between info and demonstrations. :(

Hm, I really enjoyed the music in Jen's video. The intro to each chapter, in particular, I found particularly catchy. But that's just me :).

We have a thread already started on this but limited feedback so far. It's on the same forum page but here is the link.

If your new to painting minis and want a good video I would suggest hot lead
http://www.coolminiornot.com/shop/dvds/hot-lead-3-dvd-set.html

A higher skill level then hot lead would be the miniature mentor DVD. http://www.coolminiornot.com/shop/d...plete-solution-to-miniature-painting-dvd.html
Or go to their website for the subscription service.

so far i have Miniature Painting with Jereme Bonamant Teboul, Miniature Mentor DVD (Wolfen) and Miniature Painting Secrets with Natalya.

(1) Painting with Jereme Bonamant Teboul + Miniature Mentor DVD (Wolfen Prowler) have in common that the figure is close to the camera and you get a lot of informations.

(2) Miniature Painting Secrets with Natalya is kinda far from the camera and no informations or rater few.

"...The Natalya video is more 'tutorial by observation' ..."

Right at the start when she starts to paint the dwarf i dont know what she is doing.... is she wetblending or is she using colors which are drying fast (she uses valejo so they dry normaly) so what do i see or what do i think i see .!?
If she would tell/say something it would be easier. Would the camera be closer i could observe something, but its far away so i can just take a guess...

So is the DVD Set from Jennifer Haley in the categorie of (1) or of (2) ?

I've been painting for 30 years now and I quite enjoyed the HotLead DVD. I must admit I'm no Michaelangelo of the miniature world to be sure, but that's more lack of talent then lack of knowledge of the techniques and I was able to pick up information from each of the DVDs in the set (even the beginning one). I found his instruction pretty well laid out and described. My only complaint of that DVD set was the lack of cohesion in the subject matter, he needed to stick with a couple minis and carry them through to completion. I don't own the DVDs by either of the ladies above, single income family with three kids prevents me from blowing to much money but I am quite happy with the choice I made and my son got to benefit from it as well where he wouldn't have with Natalya's video being an absolutely beginner painter.
