Resin Casting Services

Hi!

A very good friend of mine is launching a kickstarter for a video game that his company is currently developing. One of the stretch-goal rewards is a limited run resin cast of one of two main characters from that game that I will be painting.

I've been tasked with finding a service that would cast the high-quality 3D print of each character in resin. What I am looking for are recommendations (or direct contact from) businesses that can do the mold making and resin casting for us. Honestly, I could do it myself, I just don't have the equipment currently. Or the time.

They will be multi-part, very limited production run. Size of assembled models is between 6 and 8 inches tall/long.

The human character will have one clear component and is not terribly complex in design/pose. Arms, head and, possibly, one leg as separate cast components.

The alien character is multi-limbed and will have a lot of subtle, non-specific surface detail. Torso, thorax, mandibles, pair of arms, and six legs components.

Both models will have 3D printed and cast scenic bases.

Total model count is about 15-20 full kits of each model, with a total count of no more than 35 total kits combined. Exact count TBD, based on the Kickstarter feedback.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Would be interesting in learning more on this also. Also how would you expect to give the design to the print company?

Can I ask if you have actually seen the 3d print, what most people don't understand is unless you had the print done with one of the extremely expensive printers (100k+) it will have a spaghetti like texture that will come through in the casting.

Agree. I believe the topic is for high quality printing "service" so would be a 100k+ machine I would imagine ;) Well that's what I am referring to. Not a home printer.

Actually, we specifically need someone to handle the resin casting. Though, an alternate provider for the 3D printing part might be a good suggestion.

I'm well aware of 3D printing technologies by type/method and, yes, the quality can very significantly based on a number of factors.

We've already been in communication with the proprietor of Moddler ( http://www.moddler.com/ ). The designer of the game in question is already working on high-res versions of the 3D models, with pose and textured surfaces baked into the geo as instructed. Once they are "printed," they will be handed off to me for cutting apart (as needed) and spruing-up for casting.

I have a background in prototype model fabrication (old-school/analog) and mold making. While I may be a bit rusty, I know what I'm doing. I just don't have the "bandwidth" to do this many resin casts in a reasonable amount of time, or more than a couple parts at a time. Hence, we need a service to do the actual production run.

Thanks for the info Wickedcarrot. I'll shoot 'em a message!
