Thanks to the internet there all kinds of videos and write up and how to videos for painting. But is there any books cater to painting miniatures in general. And what about books/guides on color theory, mediums etc anyone know of any good books?

I have some of the AK magazines while their good, there not really in-depth, I know the scale model industry has a lot to offer but coming from 40k background only not sure where to start.

While some painting guides out their offer a lot, they are only geared towards there products which makes sense, however looking for the actual theory on something and how and why it works or is achieved, not use brand colors X,Y,Z will end up looking like this. Games works paint guides are exactly that a guide on how to use there paints, and really doest show anything other adult version of paint by numbers, their Warhammer TV channels has some useful tips and goes a little more in to detail but gain its just paint by numbers. The forgeworld master class books, don't offer much, a few tips that might not have been know but other than it's not over all helpful, great looking stuff in it but wont help you much if trying to hone your skills.

While painting is just like another perishable skill and requires hours and hours of work to improve on, and some are more gifted than others, reading and understand theories and techniques can help offset the fact I spend months at time not being able paint.

For books that get more into the theory of miniatures, I think one of the best if Figopedia.

Take a look at that link. You should be able to see enough sample pages to get an idea of what it's like. The focus of the first volume (and there's currently only that one) is light and color. If you're looking to paint display level figures, competition figures, or just really want to have some impressive gaming pieces, then this is a great resource. If you're just looking to have a decently painted army to play with, it might be more info than you need.

Another good book is Color and Light: A Guide for the Realistic Painter by James Gurney. Now, this is focused on traditional (2-D) painting. But there is a lot of great information in there which can be applied to figures as well.

Books I found good:
- Darkson Designs Painting Guide 1 (sadly there are no more)
- CMON is passable
- I learned a LOT from 2 step-by-steps: Magmatrax and HUSH!
- Laszlo Adoba's diorama series is super
- Andrea Miniatures painting girls is good

A few good magazines:
- Game Forces. Despite the name it's all about painting
- Weathering Magazine
- FigurePainterMagazine: great value for the price (1-1.3 GBP / issue, they are at issue 40)

Those books seems very detailed and some of them I am going to be picking up.

The figure painter magazines i have seen pop up few times wasn't totally sure what it had to offer, I thought it was more of review of new kits and paints and not so much teaching aid. I guess downloading a few copies before I took off agin would give something to read on the plane.

I have fairly good table top armies now always room for improvement, looking to take my painting to next level add things I normally wouldn't and learn new things and ways of doing stuff. So the light and shadow stuff seems interested as normal just paint light depending on the way i am holding the figure and the lights I am using interact act it with. So taking the extra steep to understand ways to improve on that sounds helpful, I am sure I am in for learning curve with some of what there teaching.

Yes there are a LOT of reviews in them, but also 2-4 Tutorials and a few interviews and other useful articles.
They do a yearly bundle (years 1-2 for 8GBP/year, 3rd year for 10GBP), and I think for painters for the price of one White Dwarf the 12 Issues have a lot of useful articles.

Ok cool, I am not around enough to scribe to WD, but downloading all the pass issues of FPM seems like better investment.
