Reaper Paints

Reaper paints are as thick in consistency as Vallejo, but the pigment is not as fine. Their strong point is the variety of natural shades, but they are not my first choice. If not for their browns, I\'d use only GW and Vallejo.

It\'s gotta be the skulls

As has been mentioned in other posts, Reaper paints come with an agitator (I put a bead in my vallejos to do the same thing) that is in fact a little skull for your painting fun when you empty the bottle.

I have used reaper and have just tried Vallejo last night I do not belive I will ever use any other paint again unless forced. The Vallejo is IMHO the bomb.

Like skin tones better than Vallejo

I use a lot of different paints, but the primary one is Vallejo. The only problem is I find their skin tones to be a bit orangy.

Reaper skin tones are much nicer, but the bottle really wrecks the paint. It allows too much contact with the air, causing clumps and strips of \"cured\" paint inside the bottle. As the paint ages, it begins to bind with itself, and becomes so grainy it is almost useless.

I\'ve been putting my Reaper paints in Vallejo-type droppers that I get from my art store. It is amazing how much better the stuff works when put in a proper bottle.

Reaper is suppost to be coming out with Master Paints. This product will have a finer pigment grain than their current product and will come in dropper bottles.

I\'m looking forward having the Reaper range of skin tones available in a higher-quality product, packaged in dropper bottles.

By the way, TAB, I added a class for Grail Quest - \"The Eyes Have It\". :)

I love Vallejo paints. My only problem with them is the skin tones. For my figures, I use almost nothing else BUT Vallejo.

Help please...

I tried asking these questions on a seperate forum with no responses, maybe someone who reads this forum can help...

1) Has anyone here used Reaper silk colors yet? They are a line of paints with some opalencense mixed in. If you have used them, what did you paint with them and how were your results?

2) What is your opinion on the Reaper inks and ink extender? What is the role of ink extender and why would I want to purchase it instead of diluting with water or magic wash? Is ink extender compatable with the GW inks?

Thank you for your time and help!

Silks

I\'ve used silks (armoury/coat d\'arms) and they can look very nice, but you need to highlight and shade them with silks or inks: if you mix them with other paints, the opalencense will partly disappear and look strange

I have done one mini using Reaper silks, and plan to do more experimenting. You can see the mini here - http://www.coolminiornot.com/47365

My understanding from on the Reaper forum is that the silks are intended to be used as glazes (thinned coats over an existing base paint), which is how I used it in this case.

I painted the dark pink area in a regular matte paint first, and painted on highlights, going up pretty pretty. Then I did a couple of glaze coats with a pink silk paint. (The Reaper forum mentioned that you could get different effects using different silk colours over different bases.)

Then I went back over the highlights with thinned white silk, doing more layers over areas I wanted to appear the brightest. Lastly I did shadowing in the deeper areas with a regular matte dark pink, so it both added shadows and damped down the irridescence in those areas. That technique seems to have worked pretty well, as if I turn the miniature upside down the brightest parts still appear where I painted them.

The mini looks a little nicer in real life than in the photo, and I like the texture contrast between the matte and irridescent areas. But it photographed better than I thought it would.

I have also used Reaper\'s inks, but not enough of anyone else\'s to compare. I have problems doing washes, so mainly I\'ve used them as glazes to intensify colour. The one GW ink I have seems to work a little better at that than the Reaper\'s, but that\'s not really enough experimentation either way to say.

Thank you Wren for your help and the beautiful link you posted. I think I will stick with my GW inks for the most part, however the silks are definitely something I will put on my want list! Thanks again

Yes, the Reaper Silks are meant as a glaze-type as they are transparent. I\'d use the matte base-coats first.

As for the Master Class of paints, I\'ve been out of the loop as of late but I\'ll see what information I can grab from Anne on the Reaper forums. I know she often has a lot of input into the paint colors and has been harping about getting a decent shade for dark skin tones so we wouldn\'t have to mix and try to remember what our mix was.

Last I knew, Reaper will be putting out Master Class in the dropper bottles and IIRC they will sell the dropper bottles singly as well. Once I have more information I\'ll get back to you.

Thank you dauber, it\'s nice to know I\'ve been missed. :)

Now, here\'s the information I could dig up.

From Anne Foerster:

Master paints will come out in the spring. They will be in dropper bottles. They will (alas, Enchantra) be around three bucks a bottle, because they need to be to cover the costs of upgrading our pigment, binder, and bottles. Good art supplies are almost never cheap (with the exception of Folk Art Extender!! A great many of the colors will be drawn directly from our current Reaper line; we\'ll just be improving the formulation and going to new bottles. Others will be brand-spanking new. There will, for example, be a truly dark black-purple if I have to jump up and down and cry my little eyeballs out.

As for the release date, I\'m still pending an official answer, but so far I\'m hearing July, possibly as late as maybe November.

As for Alliance, they have a listing up of the current Master Paints that should be coming out. Here\'s that list. NYA stands for \"Not Yet Announced.\" Also, as I understand it, the Master Paints should have a better adhesion than even Vallejo.

I am all up ons the scheduling of the new class I am counting the nineteen days till festivities (Grailquesting we will go)

I have used the ink extender and liked it it makes the ink less bubbly and smoother/even to work with for coverage.

I just came back from Origins, where I was working with the Demo Team. I asked Jay Ragan (hope I spelled that right) about the Master Paints. I\'m still a little fuzzy on when they will be available. Not for a few more months yet, it seems like.

TAB: I\'m counting down the days to Grail Quest. Just a little over two weeks now! My son is signed up to run a Warlord demo, and I\'ll probably run a few informal demos on the games (Warlord and CAV) myself.

They will have open tables for unscheduled activities, and I\'m planning on doing additional painting and playing stuff there.

While I was at Origins, I picked up the remainder of the paints I need for the NMM effects Thierry has been talking about on the English Confrontation board. If you\'d like to look at the info I\'ve posted, go to my website and click on \"Thierry\'s Paint Chart\".

I will be getting some credit from Reaper for working at the convention, which I can use to get paints and models for demos. I should be very well equiped by the time Grail Quest comes along.

Looking forward to seeing TAB and any others in the Florida/Georgia area then.

Mel
