Questions \'bout Warmachine/Hordes and Warhammer Fantasy...

Hello boys and girls, me am thinking about starting with Warmachine.
I really like their miniatures and so far I only heard good things about the game.
But before I try to convince my friends to start with Warmachine and go out to buy some rulebooks I\'d like to get some answers...
I googled a bit and asked some people here at my local hobby store, but noone could compare the gameplay satisfactorily to me. (Either they didn\'t play Warhammer, or they disliked GW...) The thing here is that I really like Warhammer Fantasy and I love to play my freaky greenies
lol
So, when Warmachine plays similar to Warhammer (be it in a smaller scale) I will only buy some cool miniatures, but If it plays faster, more dynamic or if it is just plain fun, I\'ll buy the full rules and start to convince my friends!!!

If you can compare Warmachine to Confrontation (I play it too) and especially to Warhammer Fantasy...please answer
:p

PS: I\'m looking for a nice mini-game to play when theres not enough time or just not enough appetite to play Warhammer...

PPS: Sorry for talking so much.... Bad habit...

Go for it

I do not play Confrontation because the sales rep let me know you kinda need someone who playes to teach you .

I did play Warhammer limited and because I did not like it I stopped, the guys in the house played more than I but they stopped as well.
Too me there were too many dice involved with your fate and the played too large a role.
Many tell me that it is a very tactics game but I just got a bad taste too begin with . I played Chaos, daughter beastmen son played nids and hubby tau. Between the rolls to see if daughters team was drunk and all that other stuff.I had the best time building the army more than the actual play thus I lost interest quickly!

We now play Warmachine because Jeff a friend of hubby\'s said he changed from WH to WM and the rules were balanced better.

I have painted the WM minis since they first came out Cryx has cool mini etc... but we thought we would try the Warmachine game and see, I have to say I tried last out of all of us. I love it ... we all do .

It is fast fun easy but not too easy, tactics play more than dice but dice still effect luck. I love it and I am picky and do not have a lot of time to waste with out a very large fun factor calling.

Here is a blog excerpt I made about the mega battle Newbie warmaching

HERE you can look at from hubby he tracks the play at times.

When we play it can go on for days and we take the dining table and draw positions in pencil where we left off then at dinner or free time we pick up the game again. We play to complete death so far and the shift that can be caused by player decisions bring some surprising results in who wins.
I personally ... highly suggest you invest in Warmachine, also if you play hordes the same rules apply as the original jack game so it is a easy transition. Right now hubby is investigation the RPG as well so I can not let you know what we think of that yet.
Cheers
Tracy

Hehe...

...the short 4000 point battle breakdown was a nice read!
What I know so far is that 1000 points per side is a big battle and that \"standard\" battles run between 500 and 750 points. It\'s a good thing that there is less dice-rolling involved, because this is an annoying aspect. In warhammer your movement is the most important part...but I like big armies clashing in the middle.
I picked up Confrontation at Spiel 2006 ,because it was fun and the tactics part went from moving to fighting. It is a more intensive, more tactical game. And it\'s shorter!

Warmachine seems to play quite different. Interesting is that you can play Warmachine against Hordes if you like. Sounds interesting!

I\'m torn between Cryx and Khador. Maybe I can pick up both starter boxes (I love the minis) and play some games with the beginner rules against my friends and see if they like it? Hmmm, Hmmm.......

...PS:...How to argument when you want to spend money on little pieces of metal.....you know what I mean? lol

Warmachine against Hordes

seems hordes may be a bit stronger though but I have not tried them

Glad it helped if I could choose or had got there before my son , I would be a Cryx player all the way. Why just saying Goreshade the bastard , is worth it...really they are a strong army to field.
Cheers and good luck!

Today I bought the Cryx battlegroup box. Maybe I can start painting them tonight. On Wednesday I\'ll have my first test game in my local gaming store. Maybe I\'ll start a WiP thread where I cover the work on my growing army. But since I\'m not a good painter at the moment it won\'t be very interesting for most of you, but otherwise it an be encouraging for people who start painting and probably I\'ll can get some critique, which always helps to improve. See Ya!

You will become a better painter faster if you start a wip here. It is a great idea! lurking will get you no where just toughen your skin and heed initial advice.

After a while you start to form your own technical style opinions but when I first started I was a sponge and tried it all...not all the advice worked but lots of it did.
You seem like a great person you should fit right in!

I realize I\'m late to the discussion on this one, but I thought I might offer some different perspective. I\'m the unofficial Warmachine Rep for my hobby store, and handled all of the work process needed to make one of our customers a formal pressganger. So I offer this to anyone else who is also possibly thinking of getting into the game.

-The Basic Rundown of the Factions-

Khador- Slow moving plates of armor. Hard to damage, and lay a heavy beating on their opponent. Even their infantry are quick to drop a heavy fist, of course the con to this, is they can easily be out-maneuvered if you are not careful.

Cygnar- The poster boys of the WM universe, much like the Space Marines for WH 40k. A lot of people like to contribute the army to being a very range oriented army and while they have many ranged units this is not their strong suit. Cygnar\'s strength revolves around mobility and strong stable of \"buff\" spells to make already tough units even better.

Cryx- Your undead faction, much like the Necron\'s. The Cryx will always outnumber their opponent and they\'re warcasters are some of the most fearsome spell-slingers in the game. They\'re fast, plentiful, and while they aren\'t hard to kill once you hit them, the actual act of tagging them becomes a severe problem, and they bring a powerful punch with every unit they field.

Menoth - The religious zealots of the game, Menoth make up the finese army. They\'re infantry, solo\'s, warcasters and \'jacks all build and support one another. They are decent spellcasters, their infantry can cover a decent range of mobility, and their jacks carry a distinct Khador feeling to them. In short the \"jack of all trades\" army so to speak.

Mercenaries - I got one word for the Mercenaries ... \"Pirates\". Now mind you, pirates aren\'t the only thing in the mercenary faction, they are indeed the minority but... steampunk pirates.... thats gold.

Your average Warmachine game at 500 points, lasts roughly an hour, and a 750 game about an hour and a half to two with scenarios lessening or extending those times. And warmachine indeed can be played against the Hordes and its actually a fairly equal match. While the Hordes army starts off much stronger due to the way they cast spells and use warbeasts, as the Warmachine team eliminates these warbeasts, Warmachine factions begin to take the upper hand. In short, Hordes starts stronger, Warmachine finishes stronger.

At any rate, once you pick up the rule book (Prime Remix being the optimal starting book for a new player as it combines Prime and Escalation while adding in all th errata) you\'ll find that Warmachine is built in much the same way WH40k was, which is to say, the story is amazing, and every unit has great fluff. Its a really fun game over all, and definitely worth giving a chance.
