Question for the Vallejo Game Color users?

Hey guys I was wondering if any of you have tried the VGC equivalents to the newer GW foundation paints and washes? I was in a shop the other day and saw they are doing these now. I'm tired of the small pots from GW and increasing price. Just want to make sure they are a close match to the others.

Awhile back I bought the VGC foundation paint set (titled extra opaque) and have used them, and I still use them today. The majority of these paints do match up, but some of them just plain do NOT. Here's the chart for comparison based on the box you get when you buy the VGC Extra Opaque Set:

VGC EXTRA OPAQUE------CITADEL FOUNDATION

Heavy Skintone---------Tallarn Flesh
Heavy Red -------------Mechrite Red
Heavy Violet------------Hormagaunt Purple
Heavy Blue-------------Mordian Blue
Heavy Bluegrey---------Astronomican Grey
Heavy Grey-------------Adeptus Battlegrey (Not a match at all)
Heavy Green------------Knarloc Green
Heavy Blackgreen-------Orkhide Shade
Heavy Warmgrey--------Dheneb Stone (Not an exact match)
Heavy Kakhi------------Gretchin Green (not sure on this one.)
Heavy Ochre------------Tausept Ochre
Heavy Goldenbrown------Iyandem Darksun
Heavy Orange-----------Macharius Solar Orange (a notable difference)
Heavy Brown------------Khemri Brown
Heavy Siena------------Calthan Brown
Heavy Charcoal---------Charadon Granite

As you can see, there are a few colors missing. VGC didn't translate all the colors from the Citadel versions. The colors missing, that you'll need to stick with Citadel with, are:

Necron Abyss
Fenris Grey

From what I've seen, these aren't matched as well as the regular VGC line to the regular citadel paints. And the one's I pointed out (especially Heavy Grey) don't match that well at all. Although, I've not noticed too much of a difference in strength, comparing VMC and Citadel Foundation Paints. They already have plenty of pigment in them.

I bought a bottle of the Heavy Bluegrey. I was pretty happy with it. Very accurate color. Haven't tried the others yet.

if i can jump in with a question; how do the vallejo paints compare to the gw paints?? Been thinking of buying some vallejo paints but was then thinking why buy new paints if it isn't an improvement on the old (GW paints)

There is no difference in opacity or overall quality but fortunately they do not dry as fast as the Foundation Paints. And you get a bit more paint for less money.

This is just my opinion on the subject, but I prefer vallejo paints vastly to citadel. You get much more (17ml) and the paint itself really shouts quality. The dropper bottles are also great.

In short, I can't even consider using citadel after using them in the beginning, then finding our about VGC. Now, I've moved on to Vallejo Model Color as I like it the best, and no longer need citadel equivalents anymore (I go by eye now). But I also supplement with some reaper master series as well.

My two cents anyway.

I love the model color line and am now going to using the game colors instead of GW. I like the GW paints but they have finally priced them selves out of me using their paints with a equally as good substitute that's cheaper. I stuck with the GW paints through the years because unfortunately they don't all ways max up perfect with the Game Colors, plus was working in one of the stores for 4 years so citadel paints where cheep for me and all I could use on the clock.

Thanks for the input guys can't wait to try out the new colors now ^_^

I'll be trying the new ones too, before it was only really the dropper bottle that gave preference over Citadel, these days I don't want to spend £2+ for 12ml when I can get 17ml for £1.75 or cheaper in bulk.

I have only tried the Heavy Goldenbrown for my Bad moons, and I prefer it over Ilyaden darksun. You get more paint for the money and I like the drop bottles more. I will buy the VGC- series insted of Citadel when I need to buy more foundation paints.

Just adding my 2c worth here. I'm slowly building my collection of VMC paints and have a few VGC as well. As was said above they are cheaper and you get more. Also there is a much wider variety of colours. The only thing I have found with them is that they dont adhere as well as the Citadel stuff when you water them down with plain water. They rub off much more easily during handling. I have ovecome this by using some matte medium in my dilution mix. They also separate on your pallette a lot quicker.

Well I mostly use VMC these days BUT there are still a couple of very useful colours in the GW range. Snakebite Leather, Beastial Brown & Scorched Brown mostly.
Even though these have severely dried up, since I use then as washes/tints, its not that much of an issue.
