Question about Color and Flying Base Rods

Hey guys

I\'m having a delimma. Currently I have a finished piece, which is:

WH 40k Obliterator (big heavy metal)
He is converted into a leaping pose. His arms and legs were completely removed and repositioned into this. His arms no longer exist, in place of them, I molded multiple grappling tentacles as if he\'s reaching towards his prey. His legs are behind him a bit, as if he just lept into the air to pounce. He is painted up in Iron Warriors type scheme, so he\'s metallic -- very silver, some gold here and there, lots of daemonic flesh, which is hues of deep reds and lighter palish off yellows and opals.

I also finished his base, which is 40mm round black base, which black ash gravel, which was made from a PVA over gravel mixture, painted black, painted up in various tones of grey, with some little brown areas which lead to a small hint of old grass in the middile (to break all the dark bleak landscape). Anyhow, the mini is striking, and the base is dark.

I have drilled the mini so that a flying rod has been mounted on the base, and it fits under the mini, into it\'s hole. I have not glued it yet, which would finish the project, because I hit this problem:

Color of the Rod.

Currently, it\'s clear. When I looked at it a few times, with the mini on it, the clear rod looks ok. However, the base that I painted the mini on, has a black rod, and when I see the mini on the black rod, I find it less obvious.

So - Should I paint this clear flying rod straight black in order to hide it? Or does the clear rod actually hide it better you think?

Would love to know some opinions, so I can fix what is neccessary, mount him and call him finished.

Cheers & Thanks! :)

i think you have answered this yourself. if it looks less incongruous painted black, paint it black. maybe add some loger grass if it\'s in the grassy area that you mentioned to camoflage it a little more

Yea, you\'re right. I did answer my own question. However, sometimes, my gut lies to me and I do something really stupid that I can\'t undo. Anyhow good to hear someone else agrees with my gut :D

Thanks!
Cheers!

ether way make sure you snap off the peg on the rod and drill the hole slightly larger.... this way the peg wont break inside the mini and you get a stronger peg

Sometimes I get the same effect by replaceing the clear peg with some sort of terrain feature.. like a stump or a I-Beam if its a rubble base. You could sculpt it or theres all sorts of Plastic stuff made by Plastruct. To pin it to your model you can use a brass pin.

Thanks everyone.

I went ahead with the black rod. I like the black a lot more than the clear. Just a note, this is a table top mini, so I needed him to be very securely fitted down. And I wanted him off of the base, to represent the in game effect of \"leaping.\" Anyhow, the big old obliterator is now leaping through the air, and the little black peg is nice and sturdy, and hidden.

If you\'d care to see the results, I posted it here, at this link

Thanks again everyone!
Cheers!

i gave it an 8. the base part works quite well. you did a great job of the armour - it really shines. he the only thing is that he looks like he is half running, half flying. also the pics need to be larger if you ask me. oh and the tentacles look gross!!

looks good *thumbs up* did you snap the peg like said? cause that may cause a problem down the line if you didnt (i hear this complaint alot and have complained myselfe until i started enlarging the holes and snapping the pegs pre maturely) its alot easyer to drill the hole bigger when theres nothing in it then when theres a peg stuck in it ;)
