Purity Seal Ribbon-What colour palette to use?

As long as Ive been mini painting Ive never been truly happy with painting the ribbon section of Purity Seals, (as simple as it should be), as I never seem to get the choice of colours right.

Any tips and advice would be most welcome.

Cheers.

I paint it like this:
1)Dheneb Stone+Bleached Bone
2) Devlan Mud wash
3)Basecoat
4)Blending up to Bleached Bone (you can also push the highlights up to white).

I've found myself selecting different colours depending on what the miniature is. Going for something I've not used a great deal on the rest of the mini'.

Essentially, a brown heading to white. Charred Brown is a simple and groovy one to start with, as it has such a strong grey element that comes out when white is added it can evoke such age and grubbyness.

Thanks guys.

@Wyrmypops:
I noticed you use Vajello paints, (Charred Brown). How are they and wheres the best place to purchase them from? I, outside of a few Rowney Inks, predominantly use Citadel but am always looking for ideas.

I exclusively use Vallejo paints, too, though I also use the GW inks, like Devlin mud and Gryphonne Sepia. They are based out of Barcelona, Spain, so if you're in the UK you should be able to find them at any local hobby shop. I'd recomment picking up the suitcase that has 75+ paints in it.

The Game Color series is designed to mimic GW colors, so those will probably be the easiest for you to use. These are FANTASTIC paints!!

Maelstrom Games stock Vallejo Game colour, Model colour and Model Air. They are good to + free postage. They are in the UK, Mansfield (but don't hold that against them!)Just use your favourite search engine, 'Maestrom Games'. VERY good shop and good service

I picked up a few Vallejo paints at a convention, on the off chance they were groovy. Turns out they were more than groovy, they're cheaper, and replicate the GW range of colours with occasional thinly veiled name changes. There's charts online in a few places to be googled, describing which paints in one range correlate to the other. I did mean to say "Scorched Brown" as per the GW paint, but slipped into the Vallejo.

Heard they were the folk that actually made the paints for GW, though that could be untrue. Have since been more inclined to buy them than a GW paint, as drying up seems less an issue with them. Last batch I bought was online from http://www.legendgames.co.uk/

Alledgedly they were approached to see if they could do the paints, but GW then found that they could get them manufacturerd in China for a lot less.
Coat D'Arms made the original round pot paints for GW and are still in business (search engine on the name).

Vallejo Game Colours are the match for GW's current range, but Vallejo Model Colours have a greater range of colours, 220 in total. VGC don't always have as good a reputation as VMC, but both have very good paints and paints that require a bit more work.

Granddad!
I believe Mike is correct about the VGC, Vallejo being asked by GW to produce the range and then going else where, hence the reason for similar names

@GP: just use the tags: {url=short link name here{/url}

Swap the {} for []tho, I just put them in so (hopefully) they wouldn't actually work in the example, :fingers-crossed:
