Project Log 2.0

Well, I haven't updated my original project log in a couple of months. I was going to do so tonight but decided to organize my photobucket into specific albums first. This brilliant decision of mine resulted in not only the pictures in my old project log going poof, but also half of my CMON submissions. Wouldn't be the holidays without something going wrong I guess. :p

Though I did learn a lesson not to use pictures hosted online as submissions but rather just upload them directly from my hard drive. Anyways, so back to a regular project log.

First off, here are some Savage Orc Boar Boyz that I finished. These are part of a much larger Orc Army commission.

Also, I just recently finished what to me was a very fun and interesting project, a Napoleonic Austrian Army. What was great about it was the amount of knowledge that I was able to gain on the specific units, army organization, etc.

The client requested that I don't paint the bases, so just gave them a light coat of brown for cohesion.

Finally, here are the very early stages of a large IG Praetorian Army.

That about does it for recently finished stuff. I still have that Goblin Army from way back to finish so that will be up shortly, along with a bit more Pulp City miniatures, some Blood Bowl teams and the continuation of the two above armies.

Cheers everyone and happy holidays!

Thanks guys!

@freakinacage: The minis are 25mm "true scale."

@mick: Glad you like them. I am waiting on an order of War of the Ring regiment bases from GW so that I can make trays for these guys. Going to be a sort of Rorke's Drift theme going with the whole army. :)

Here is a small update.

First off is the finished base for the Praetorians, the whole army will be based on those.

P1010700.jpg

Also got a command squad done for them. Decided to go with a predominant blue rather than the red. According to my Opsrey books, British officers worse blue rather than the red during the Zulu war so that along with wanting to break up what will be a sea of red made me go with the blue.

Also got back to the long overdue Goblin army and got the Boos on Wyvern done.

Next up will be some Blood Bowl Teams. I am contemplating on using one of those to do a painting video for youtube since all the cool kids seem to be doing it but still haven't decided whether or not I'll go ahead with it.

Cheers everyone!

all looks very nice, just a few points, the orc on wyvern is that not a 40k axe in his hand. In the zulu war you are correct that most staff officers were in blue but the officers of the line inf still had the red coats on so maybe you could mix them up a bit, also the Nap army looks very nice seen that on another forum and liked it then.

Thanks!

The axe indeed is a 40k one. I didn't notice until I started painting it and ultimately forgot to ask the client why he chose to use that one. Although apart for the wires and power box I like the way it looks.

Thanks for the tip on the Zulu war. The option to mix them up will help in breaking them up a bit.

They really are great minis to paint, full of character. Then again, I have a soft spot for classic GW minis.

Thanks for the comments so far everyone. Time for another update.

Next up a Orc Chariot for the Savage Orc army commission project. Got two more of these to go. Not sure how I feel about the flag, tried going for a basic rudimentary design, something that an Orc could easily draw up, but it almost looks too plain.

Finally a Norse Blood Bowl Team.

Next up is more randomness. Got more Savage Orcs, Goblins, BB Teams, Pulp City, Praetorians, as well as a bunch of 15mm and 28mm Prussians on the way.

Thanks for looking everyone.

you seem to have plenty of work on well done.
Flag does look very plain maybe some red hand prints!
blood bowl team look very butch......not:dont-know:
what make are the 28mm prussians are they SYW or Nap

The 28mm will be Foundry Napoleonic era or Battle of Jena-Auerstedt to be more specific since I'm not really a fan of the later British supplied uniforms such as those at Waterloo. The 15mm will be SYW. Both of which will be personal projects instead of commissions for once so I am very excited about it. :)

I am sure you have it coverd but if you need info on unit colours for the SYW I have books covering all the armies they are top books for the prussians even gives each units colours and button colour plus which guys chalked there hair and which didn't. Sounds sad but I am on a massive 3 year SYW project and having great fun to.

Apart for the basics I know very little about the SYW, this will be a brand new period of study for me. I am just coming off of a 3 year obsession with the Napoleonic era and decided to devote a bit of my studies to a different period. This coupled with a fairly newly found fascination with German military history and a chance to pick up a large amount of SYW Prussians has persuaded me to dissect that period next.

So far I have only picked up two books one being "Fighting for the Fatherland" by David J Stone, which gives a broad military history of the German military from 1648 to present day. Brilliant book but very limited information on the SYW.
I also managed to get "Frederick the Great, A Military History" by Christopher Duffy. Which I have not read yet but have heard very good things about. I am trying to stay away from ones that deal more with the psychological side of his life which there seems to be no shortage of.
Also thinking about getting "Army of Frederick the Great" also by Christopher Duffy.

Going through my Ospreys I also have "Kolin 1757" and "Russian Army of the Seven Years War"

I guess I've got the Prussian side well covered but any other recommendations would be much appreciated.

these are the books I have
Armies and Uniforms of the Seven Years War - A Wargamers Guide: Volume 1 Prussia and Allies
James Woods
ISBN: 1-85818-519-X
88 pages (8 pages colour)

Paperback
£13.99

On 29th August 1756, Frederick II, King of Prussia, led a pre-emptive strike across his border with the Electorate of Saxony. Frederick's justification for this action lay in the fact that he was made aware that the efforts of Austria to recover Silesia had led to the potential formation of a huge coalition of forces, opposed to Prussia.

Austria had already recruited Russia, to the degree that, in 1753, the Empress Elizabeth had agreed in principle to go to war with Prussia. In order to persuade the French to join them, the Austrians repudiated their historical ties with the British.

When Frederick signed the defensive Treaty of Westminster, on 27th January 1756, with the British, the French saw this as leaving them little option but to join the coalition, since they were already at war with the British. On 1st May 1756, they signed the First Treaty of Versailles, part of which cancelled the French guarantee of Prussian sovereignty over Silesia.

Frederick began mobilization in June 1756 and, as stated above, invaded Saxony in August 1756. This accelerated the coalition forces and, on 2nd February 1757, Austria and Russia signed a military cooperation agreement. On 1st May 1757, the Second Treaty of Versailles drew France into the coalition, along with Saxony and Sweden.

The Emperor of Germany, Francis Stephen, was married to Maria Theresa, and so lots of the southern and western German states formed part of the coalition. Since the Elector of Saxony was also King of Poland, it can be seen that, with the exceptions contained in this volume, Frederick II was at war with most of Europe.
Since the end of the Silesian Wars, Austria, most particularly in the person of Empress Maria Theresa, had been driven by an almost pathological desire to have the province of Silesia returned to Austrian control. While Silesia represented a comparatively rich province, the loss of the revenue from it was unlikely to bring the Hapsburg Empire down, but any erosion of the Imperial boundaries was to be actively discouraged. From his perspective, Frederick II, King of Prussia, would have felt the loss of Silesia more keenly since it represented a more significant percentage of his gross income, as well as being the springboard for his future expansion plans. To assist in achieving its aim, Austria put together, politically, a huge coalition of armies of European nations. While all of these coalition participants each had their own agenda, they were united by a common desire to defeat Frederick and his allies.
This book gives details of those armies which served under the Prussian banner.
