I\'ve been in the hobby over 5 months now and recently entered this model in Games Workshops National painting competition for Norway, the \'Golden Griffon\'.. It\'s sort of a mini GD!

Anyway, i managed to win the LotR single figure category, i was surprised:eek:

Heres the figure;

My photography isn\'t so good yet, i really need a digital camera but thanks to Avelorn who helped me get the best from my old analogue.

The overall winner was an excellent Forgeworld Space Wolf, sorry i dont have pics but i believe the competition will be posted on GW\'s ne website soon.

Would appreciate any tips on improvements

thanx in advance

Hi menace that is the best Legolas I have ever seen and a worthy winner of the competition. The photo looks fine to me too.

Excellent version! :D I like the clean and precise painting, and thinking about how long you have painted, this is almost unbelievable! I might paint the same miniature this summer so it\'s great to have some inspiration apart from Natalyas (Alexi Z) version!

Two things only.. I think you could have had a bit less defined cheek as he IMO looks a bit masculine for an elf. ;) The amount of contrast is good otherwise, I\'d just make the border between light and shadow less stark. The other thing is the base.. I can\'t tell if you used any coloured washes on the base, but using green and different colors to the grey help making a seemlingly onecoloured surface more interesting. great job!

I just love the richness of the colors....

How is that obtained? Do you used inks? Or just many color washes?

Really nice job. The different shades and tints of the leather vest is really good! I also like the light dusting around the back/bottom of the cloak. All around solid job.

Thank you everyone for your kind words..

@ supervike, i use glazes with a \'Golden\' glaze medium, this way i can vary the colours easier but it does mean a long time in completing even the smallest part of a figure. You are supposed to be able to work it wet in wet but it always turns out blotchey, i let it dry completely and use a hairdryer! But don\'t reglaze until the figure has cooled down again or it dries out inconsistently.. hope this helps

Are you meaning this. Or a more ordinary glaze medium? In case of the former.. how would you compare them to inks and ordinary glazes?

@ Avelorn, that\'s the stuff! It comes in gloss and satin, i use the latter as i use it so thinly there is no problem with transparency. The reason i started to use it was i was unhappy with the control of the flow with inks, i then found it was much better at achieving a consistent and even glaze.. i can make monochromatic shading / highlighting and soften it with glazes of colour... ultra thin though and several coats... i prefer the finish of using paints to inks too although this is immaterial when it is dullcoted...

ps you also have the option of making glazes from any colour you have in your paintbox!

Thanks. okay. i use Vallejo Glaze medium sometimes for a similar effect. :) You can use a matt medium in inks to get a better finish but I almost never use inks except on metals.

Congrats Dennis!

I can\'t belive that you have only painted for 5 months! I would spend 5 months only in completing the Legolas minilol Very well done, you really deserved it. This is one of the best minis I\'ve ever seen in real life:D

I also entered the competition, and made it to 2nd place in the large scale category. You can see the mini here.
