Hi All, very new, so be nice...

I was after some tips on photographing minis, not only are the minis on here FANTASTIC, but they are made all the more so by brilliant photography. This skill eludes me :(

Good mini + crap foto = crap mini

If anyone can give any tips on the following, I\'d be eternally greatful and buy them a beer (one of those statements is true..):

i) Background - How the hell u make it...dissappear, like...erm..you know proffessional.
ii) Lighting - Natural/Artificial?? if so, what sort of light, lightbulb etc
iii) Camera - Is it worth spending tons of money on one?? Or will anything with the \'Macro\' function for close up work do??

Thanks in advance :D

Jamie

I can answer the easy cheats way to do the background thing - get a printed piece of blue paper and put it behind the miniature, then you dont have to worry about cutting the image cleanly etc - just doing that now with some of my figs (ignore the two that I have up, they didn\'t use this technique).

O kl, thx. Do you put the mini on a white surface, or do some trickery to \'lose\' the surface its on?

Even easier than that just lay the piece of paper on the surface then put something under it to raise one edge (so that the paper curves up). That way you have the one colour all the way. I don\'t know if this the \'pro\' way, but it is definately the easy way!

Welcome Topol.

Now you know you\'re gonna get all the \"Fiddler on the Roof!\" jokes.
So I\'m not gonna start them, but the way you are using English I\'m assuming that you are a fellow Brit?

Anyhow isn\'t Topol the Hebrew word for the Poplar tree?

As far as I\'m concerned, Amazon provides. ;)

I used a cardboard box and the universe\'s biggest invention since the wheel (the hot glue pistol) to put together a permanent slope with the perfect height for my tripod. The white sheets to the side of the slope are supposed to reflect light and diminish the shadows created by my two halogen lights setup.
The white-to-blue gradient is printed on inkjet paper and attached to the slope with a strip of non-permanent tape. The benefit of this is that you can adjust the position of the sheet for each miniature so that you get the full gradient for both small and large minis.

A lot boils down to the settings of your camera - I can recommend this article.

Have a nice day,
Tobi

I am too learning about photography with each pic I take and whilst I am still not quite there I am improving and that is in part down to an excellent article by Honza on taking pics with only one light source.
So far I am getting better results each time.
Welcome to Cmon by the way.
