Painting Yellow (Imperial Fists)

Im looking to start painting a small Imperial Fists army as a guest/drop in army for my local club ( I play a rather huge Iron Warriors force so I thought it would be a suitably Iron-ic joke).

I need some tips on getting a good yellow feel to them as I know this colour can be a nightmare to paint-Im looking for a more mustard yellow than the bright canary yellow you so often see.

I have looked at a few guides on other forums and not really found much but one did suggest usinga yellow primer instead of white to avoid it being too bright (I am considering Army painter Dessert yellow for this)-any one got any other tips or good methods? Pictures are always appreciated cause then I can see what the scheme will look like

Going back a long time ago the Imperioal Fists were described in the SPACE MARINE novel as being a Puss Yellow so you are staying well within the \"Fluff\"

There have been a number of negative comments made about the quality of the Army Painter paints in these threads.
However there is an alternative Montana Gold Spray paints as supplied by Jackson arts.
I\'ve seen them used as Primer and they are matt and can cover Plastics or Metallic figures without any problem. The range of colours should give you a good choice to work from. (Oh and just as silly names as some of GW\'s paints as well).

I still have my original copy of that book sitting right behind me (Im a RT veteran at heart lol) and its exactly the reason why I want to go for a darker yellow than you so often see.

Thanks for the pointers, Ill have a look for those sprays you mentioned.

Any other techniques out there?

Seeing as yellow colours often have problems with coverage, some like to paint the areas that are to be yellow with a mustardy brown first, and then work up to yellow from that.

As Ritual said I would suggest using something like Bubonic Brown. I\'ve used in the past as a good shade, and you find that the yellow covers it quite well so you don\'t have to use lots of coats.

Thats spot on-the step by step pictures are really useful (somthing missing from so many GW guides-or they only give pictures of the steps you know how to do).

Apologies for the double post!

First test mini (Im using some AoBR models I got on the cheap). Please ignore the standard its the colour Im more concerned with at the mo.

Process on this one is:
Yellow Primer (as seen on storm bolter)
Devlan Mud wash
Golden Yellow/Yellow ink layer back up on armoured areas

Hi there !

Yes, yellow is a bit tricky... I think I found a good (and easy !) way to paint yellows, I found it with Space Wolves shoulder pads, and now I'm using it for my Black Reach army, which will be of the Imperial Fists.

Well, as usual, the "Fundation" paints from GW are very efficient, and for the yellow I use "Iyanden Darksun" (1:1 diluted, always water down your paints !) over a white primer. grrreat coverage, and with 2 or 3 thin layers you obtain a perfect base. But if it's diluted enough, one clean layer can be very nice.

Then I wash this with a GW wash (Badab Black or Devlan Mud), and re-paint a layer of Iyanden Darksun to clean up only the surfaces.

Next, I just apply the yellows I want, golden ones, pale ones, orange ones, brown ones, whatever. These layers must be very diluted, and personnaly I use some "flow aid" to have a better result ("flow aid mix" by Liquitex, or the much cheaper "Klir" !). If they are diluted enough, these layers can be "moved" and placed just on some places over the surface, to create nice color transitions. If I can't have enough coverage, I mix the paint with a tiny drop of Iyanden Darksun, it helps.

Finally, I highlight the edges with bleached bone and/or skull white, and sometimes I re-color the armour with very thin glaze ; that smoothes the color transitions and corrects the yellow tones if needed.

But for me, the best recipe : white primer, Iyanden Darksun, thin layers of any yellow, highlights, and the yellow is not a problem any more.

For my Imperial Fists : white primer, Iyanden Darksun, Devlan Mud wash, Iyanden Darksun, Iyanden Darksun + Prince August "Jaune Intense" (french brand for Vallejo paints), bleached bone highlights, skull white extreme hghlights, and that's all...
