Painting Velvet?

Hello all.

I\'m currently working on a converted GW von Carstein vampire, that I have converted a bit. He\'s going to be painted up to be a bit like Lestat de Lioncourt (for any Anne Rice people out there). So basically I was wondering what suggestions people had for black velvet. What I\'m trying right now is a base of black, stippled dark grey, stippled black, stippled lighter grey (on highlighted areas), stippled black, another lighter grey, another black, and then a light grey stipple. Any other suggestions? Thank you very much!

well the problem with black velvet or any kinda black cloth is this...... there isnt much one can do to express the tickness or lushness of the fabric...

well, here\'s soemthing to try out. Try painting some kinda freehand design on it to show the richness of the cloth. blend up the freehand design properly.. it can help to show the curve of the cloth

two.. I have use charred brown and slighter liter versions of the same colour to shade blackl.. but it just shows the curve of the cloth and not the texture....

perhaps you might wanna try using metallics or something to give it some kinda royal sheen. I had some results using blended metalics to create brocade.

I would have said its not possible to make something llok like velvet, but Hardy has a bunch of stuff that really looks like fabric in his gallery.

At 28mm scale though I think its pretty pointless trying, it\'ll just look odd or furry. I would just use the normal techniques for painting black.

I\'ll leave you with a quote from my idol

Try this thread, I think he did a pretty good job of red velvet.

Wow a link to my image.
I must be famous ,break out the bubbly.:D
Velvet is exactly what I was after.I think the pattern helps trick the eye a bit.
Dont know about black.Try the stippleing then give it some good washes to smooth the whole lot maybe. How about metalic highlights as mentioned then washes.
Thinking of velvet its glossy and matte so how about dullcoating the lot then highlighting with gloss.
