Painting Red Gemstones / Crystals

I'm new to the hobby and just started painting my first ever set of miniatures. I've been painting a set of four spawn points for Super Dungeon Explore with each one having a unique color scheme for their crystals. I've had some decent success with a purple and green scheme but I'm hitting a bit of a dead end in painting red gemstones. For the green and purple gems I just used a base color and adjusted it with either black or white. Then I thinned the paints and applied multiple layers of each color to create a gradient. The same mixing technique doesn't work so well with brighter colors like red as the highlights just become too pink. I figured I'd ask how you approach choosing the right colors in this situation when painting something like rubies, bloodstones, opals, etc. I've included some WIP photos below to give you all a good idea of what I'm working with here (apologies for the poor quality of the photos). Any advice on how to approach this would be appreciated.

Yup, pretty much what DR said. Highlight with yellow, and if things get too orangey, mix up a very thin red paint (so thin that a single layer is really pretty transparent) and brush that over the whole yellow/red bit. If you do this too much, it'll just turn the whole thing flat red again, but if thinned correctly it'll tint the yellow bits back to reddish. For shading, btw, you can mmix a bit of purple or green with black and then add that in small increments to the red to produce a nice gradiated shade. There's a wealth of info on these forums about colour choice and techniques for highlighting, shading and producing gradients - just use the search button. Regardless, welcome to the forums and best of luck with your mini painting endeavours :)
