Painting Over Varnish

I have a few models that I'm itching to game with so I've decided to apply all of the basecoats and then proceed with varnishing before applying shades and highlights. I've never painted over a varnished miniature before and I can't seem to find any information on the topic. Is this generally done easily or is there some unknown that I should be aware of here? For example, will some varnishes affect the paint's ability to adhere to the model?

Gloss/satin varnish may be problematic. Matt varnish is fine.

It's actually a preference of mine for gaming minis, give 'em a squirt of gloss for the protective quality, then a matt coat for the more pleasant finish, only then do the final highlights on the metallic that would otherwise have been dulled by the matt varnish.

it can be done and is done fairy regularly in commissioned armies.
- matt is no problem.
- but paint adheres to gloss really bad. (but 1 matt spray and problem is solved)
