Painting Ork Skin and Blending...

Alright, I\'m confused.

I\'ve seen some really nice ork skin painted before and most of what I\'ve read says to water down the paints for proper blending so you don\'t get these abrupt color differences.

I just tried watering down my paints a bit so I could blend various shades of ork skin. I really didn\'t put that much water in (I\'d imagine 80% paint, 20% water) and tried painting it on one of my orks...

It acted just like ink. The color I was trying to highlight with washed right into the crevasses of the model thanks to the water and basically ruined what I tried it on.

I am clearly not understanding this painting stuff. The only times my ork skin has come out even decent looking is when I simply coat it in goblin green and black ink it. What am I doing wrong? Too much water?

no. in fact, I personally tend to blend my paints about 50-50. The basecoat should be mostly paint, though. As you go up, you should use a smaller brush (I always use a GW fine detail brush) and let the paint rest on top of the raised parts, being sure not to put too much. I think your main problem is that you\'re putting too much paint on the brush, to that it all flows off of the brush. if you have less paint, there\'s less weight, and the surface tension will maintain the shape of your brushstrokes. Just keep practicing, no one gets the hang of it first time around.

When you water down paint you also have to make sure you dont overload the brush. So before you put the paint on the mini touch the brush to a tissue and any excess paint will be removed.

Post wip shots we all love looking at pics.

I\'ll post a WIP once I start getting my warboss painted. At the moment I\'m practicing on one of my boyz to see how it goes...

The paint consistency seems streaky, too, when I try and brush it on (after making sure it isn\'t too loaded up)

How are you mixing it? You\'re going to have to do a lot of stirring or shaking to work the water into the paint.
Another thing you can do is to add something to the water like a flow enhancer: a Winsor Newton flow aid for the pricy stuff or Future Floor Finish on the cheap. Some also just use dish soap, but I\'ve no idea how much of that to use.
