Painting mini holders?

Ive noticed alot of pics of parts of minis being painted on what is seemingly the end of a piece of wire or pin. I was just wondering about how this is done. Im assuming drill a small hole, insert wire with glue, paint, snip wire when done. Please let me know if I am wrong or missing out on the obvious.
