painting gold

Looking for a good looking way to paint gold armor. I'm painting a squad of sanguinary guard. If you follow the GW way you would basecoat it black,then paint it Shining Gold. Highlight with Burnished Gold then highlight with a 50/50 mix of Burnished and Chainmail. Looking for a different way that doesn't look so fake/amateur and I am not looking for non metal metal. Paint ink and wash please. I have access to old GW,Vallejo model color and Vallejo game color and P3.

If I were doing it, I'd base coat a 50/50 shining gold and scorched brown, highlight up through the metallics and then use a combination of brown, purple and green washes (not inks) to shade and tint the metal. Metallic paints are shiny by default, so adding in an opaque colour to base will tone it down a bit.
