Painting female miniatures.

I feel like perhaps I\'m posting a little too much, but I have one final question that I would like to get input on. What are the best ways to paint flesh on female miniatures? It seems to me that the best way is to be subtle with the highlights and not highlight too strongly. This is true if you are starting with a dark or pale skin-tone. What do others think about it? Also, what about painting female faces? Sometimes makeup effects can be too garish and painting lipstick is difficult sometimes. What are the best techniques people have for making a female face look femenine and attractive? I look forward to any response this gets. Thank you.:)

I like mixing in some pink to the flesh and blending around the cheeckbones. Damn, that sounds so like a cosmetics infomercial. I\'ll stop now.

IMHO it\'s important not to shade them too much, or they\'ll look like a transexual from \"rocky horror picture show\"

Subtle is best ... I do like to make sure the lips have a nice shape and a little highlight. Also, I think the eyes are crucial to giving the face some pop. When I\'m painting female faces I tend to black line the eyes (as opposd to brown for guys) ... if you\'re feeling adventursome, you can even go for eyelids which I do prefer, but w/out makeup ... it does start to look a little much.

Also, for the whites of the eyes, I\'m finding that I prefer to use a light flesh color (like Vallejo Light Flesh) for the whites instead of white. Looks a little more realistic and isn\'t quite so harsh.

I hope this is remotely useful,

Damn, now I gotta say something useful.

I\'m like Jim in using black around the eyes. My way is to paint the skin on the face and the eyes, then use a slightly darker color, flesh with some burnt sienna or (red brown) to make the eye holes darker a touch. Then I make an almond shaped black eye (not filling the eye socket) and then a white slash across that. This is my crude way of simulating eyelashes. Last is the iris, which just takes some practice to get them looking in the right direction. For colored eyes, put a dot of darker color, then a smaller dot of lighter color, then add a tiny of black (tech pens are useful here) for the pupil.

To keep the figure from getting the dreaded horse-face, blend the skin well and highlight the cheekbones more than the jawline. Watch out for over-highlighting the nose or the part under the nose and around the mouth either as this makes the face look like it is jutting out (horse-like). The object is to make the female face rounder and less angular as well as nice and smooth.

If you want some good example check Jenova as she makes all her girls nice looking.

lippy rocks

I like to put a bit of eyeshadow on most female faces to add a bit of definition, and I\'ve finally learned that one tip from the world of real cosmetics applies to minis too - don\'t match the eyeshadow to her top :) . That way you avoid the scary 80s disco diva look, as it\'s a lot more subtle - if it matches the top it stands out too much. Although for a gothy look, black and red eyeshadow look pretty good even if that\'s the outfit colour. And if you want her to look like a disco diva, then it\'s a useful tip in reverse :)

But it\'s hard to go wrong with just a slightly darker flesh shade.

I like a bit of highlighted lippy too, I usually use a mid-dark shade of whatever seems right for the mini/skintone (whether red, pink, purple, brownish or other) and highlight it a couple of times, once with a broad highlight of a mid shade, then with a skinny line or dot of a very light colour (depending on the lip shape - some suit a dot, some a line) for a final highlight. Only on the lower lip though, the upper lip stays the base colour.

Eg base of (vallejo) Red, highlight of red+basic skintone, final highlight of basic skintone+white. Helps make it look rounded without looking too shiny.

I paint eyes first as I\'m too wobbly to get the lining straight without touchups :). Adding a wee dot of white to the pupil as well can make them look quite nice, kinda more alive.

lips

I have used all of the above posters\' work for inspiration and reference, and agree with everything said so far.

In addition:
When doing lips, I only apply a color accent to the lower lip. After painting and blending the face, I paint the lower lip Scab Red. To hilite I add the lightest color of flesh to the Scab Red.

I think this is pretty effective, and helps avoid the dreaded \'clown makeup\' look to the lips. Everytime I try to paint the upper lip, it always looks too gaudy.

All of my recent fems are done this way.

Great tip, idahoan!

I, too, have struggled with the \'clown makeup\' effect when trying to do lips. I\'ll definitely have to give the only-the-lower-lip technique a try. :flip:

Jen Haley had a great article about painting female faces that I think is still in the articles section. In particular, her discussion about the color transitions was really helpful to me. The article is here on her site in case it\'s gone from the articles.

Also, as elouchard mentioned, Jenova\'s got some great looking female models. She has some stuff on her site, too.

Thanks very much people :)

There is some good advice here from some very experienced painters. Instead of writing all of mine down, I\'ll just point you to my tutorials (they will be updated soon. The skintone one needs it....).

Anyway:

Hope it helps a bit :)
