I just had a brilliant idea which I tried to use to drill out barrel holes:

Heat up a needle and scrath it over the armor, can be more realistic right?

With damage I mean scratches etc.
A scratch is very easy in principle:
paint dark line (shadow inside scratch);
immediately under it paint a light line (highlight on bottom edge of scratch).

Chips in paint use the same basic idea, with some of the metal or primer (or both) showing between the shadow and highlight lines.

Very thin lines help to give a good effect so both of these take practice to do well, despite being so simple.

Hard to control, very easy to screw up.

And it won\'t work that well on a metal kit ;)
