Painting Bone-What\'s the best approach?

Hi all, I\'m currently doing a Cryx in 10 Days of my own, like the ones on the Brushthralls site. Everything is going very smoothly, I\'ve already finished Deneghra, the Slayer and the first Deathripper is almost finished, only the bone to do left. That\'s the reason I made this thread. I suck at painting bone and want to mess up the Deathripper, which is coming along nicely. So anyone has some advise how to paint some nice bone?

just get a nice brown - snakebite leather or maybe bestial and highlight up trhough bubonic, bleached bone and then highlight with skull white. maybe with a brown wash to bring them together and redo the highlights

Normally I basecoat VMC German Cam. Black Brown(equal to GW Scorched Brown). Highlight with German Cam. Medium Brown(GW Bestial Brown), leaving the Black Brown only in the deepest recesses. Then work up to Bubonic Brown, followed by VMC Pale Sand(GW Bleached Bone). I\'m never satisfied with the way my bone turns out will using this method though. Here are some WIP pics of the Deathripper btw:

Thnx for the link, was really helpfull. I think I\'m going with the dark basecoat. As you can see I primed Black and don\'t have much confidence in using a light shade over a black undercoat.

A method that works well for me is in this thread:

I just recently started in on my own Cryx stuff, after letting it sit around for about a year. I also switched to black primer again, after using only white for a long time.

Anyway, I was really happy with the way the bone I did on those came out, and it was really easy, too.

On the black undercoat, I did two thin coats of VMC Khaki to get good, even coverage. I started adding VMC Ivory a bit at a time and layered up the highlights, until I got to pure Ivory.

The thing that I tried (which was inspired by some of Ali McVey\'s dead things) was to give the teeth a different treatment. For them, I started with VMC London Grey, and slowly added white. The result is that the teeth really stand out, and I\'m doing all my dead guys this way from now on.

I will take some pictures this weekend and post them up (assuming my internet connection stays alive), since I got a new camera and I\'m itching to try it (and my lightbox) out! :)

Thnx for all the tips. I went for basecoat of VMC German Cam. Medium Brown with a drop of VMC German Cam. Black Brown. First highlight was pure VMC German Cam. Medium Brown. I then started building up by adding GW Bubonic Brown. When it was almost pure GW Bubonic Brown I started adding VMC Pale Sand. I then highlighted with pure VMC Pale Sand and the final highlight was VMC Pale Sand+GW Skull White. I\'m quite happy with the results, it will look nice on the table:
