Painting Black Armor

I just wondering if anyone has some advice for painting Black Space Marine Armor. Iam currently working on a Black Templer Hero and need advice.

Well you picked a hard one to try.
Painting black armour is a very daunting process.
Basically it\'s down to either very sharp highlights of something like Ghostly Grey along the edges of the armour, or very soft highlights with a mix of Chaos Black, Regal blue and Codex grey applied thin and very sparingly.

Good luck and I hope that this helps.

One thing you might try is to start with the mini grey. Then do the shadows (obviously) in black and work out from there instead of starting black and highlighting. Like Dragonreach said, you picked a tough one.

I guess the questions is what do you want it to look like?

You could also use other colors like Blood Red mixed with Chaos Black, purple... so have fun and play around with colors until you find a combo that works. :D

Not having to paint black armour before i\'m not sure how well this works, but from numerous sources i\'ve heard that adding hawk turquois to black to highlight works well ???.anyone else heard this? ill leave it with you.

Ugh, it\'s hard to do right.
Check out http://www.jrn-works.dk and look at his tutorial for black.

Here\'s a good idea on how to do it too.

The winner there(Chaos Champ by Seb Perbet) it\'s a great example.

wel if you wanna cheap prim/baecoat him with chaso black. the do the emblems and all white-ish like usual.

then take some lich purple/shadow grey with black ink and use it for shadowing.
i dont know the proportions, but you should only be able to see a purple/grey haze when mixed. more on the purple and black side tho.

then being a hero to draw the eye away from the shadowed lines and standard black and white scheme of the BT. just chip some of the armor up with a bit of mythril silver to show your Hero has earned being called that.

just my $0.02 worth.

Look at Astonia\'s a gallery in particular a black horse she did. It shows the bst way I have seen to do black. I paint Sisters of Battle and I prime Chaos Black, lightly drybrush with Codex Grey, then apply highlights using vaious mixtures of Codex Grey and Chaos Black. My army is a decent army and one of the best painted in my local gaming store. I plan on posting it when finished, but like I said earlier Astonia is the painting godess when it comes to black, view her mini.

That damned horse gives me nightmares! I actually had it on my monitor as wallpaper while I was trying to emulate some of it. More exasperation than inspiration, Astonia! :p

Me thinks what\'s been said in this thread so far can easily be distilled - there is no such thing as pure black. Almost all blacks have some sort of tint, and the trick is to use that tint to highlight. For example, my black leather wallet is really a very, very dark brown. I\'d try using a mix of dark green and grey to highlight black armour, but that\'s just my preference.

It\'s not armour, but this might emphasize my point: a blue roan horse is blue because it has a mixture of black and white hairs. The mix of the two brings out the blue tinting.
Blue Roan 1
Blue Roan 2
\"Blue Roan: More or less uniform mixture of white with black hairs over a large portion of the body, but usually darker on head and lower legs; can have a few red hairs in mixture. \"

Now, this is just a theory, as I haven\'t tried it, but I think it might work decently, especially if you\'re doing a lot of models.

Prime white, or even better, grey. If you prime white, then go over all the areas that are supposed to be black with a medium grey or grey-blue. Add a touch of black to this and thin down into a glaze. Glaze over the whole area that will be black. Make another glaze, a bit thinner, of pure black and glaze again.

I\'ve found that the \"multiple wash/glaze\" technique is actually pretty decent, especially for \"speed painting.\"

(A great example of NMM bronze done with the multiple wash technique can be found in the bone thread by EArkham.)

I find \"rotting flesh\" to be a good highlight color for black.
Black
Small highlight of mostly black with a little green.
Smaller highlight with more green in the mix.
Don\'t go all the way to green except maybe on a sharp edge like a blade.
