Painting Benchmarks

Afternoon All!

I have been a subscribing member on CMON for some time now and I have followed many posts and threads with interest. I also started one that I now cannot find about \"what makes a pro-painter\" as I was getting frustrated with:

eBay listings saying \"pro-painted\" and also people desrcibing themselves as pro-painters or claiming they did commission work, when quite frankly their standard of painting was sub-table top.

The discussion was interesting and lately I have been reminded of the fact that other \"arty\" pursuits have societies, associations, etc to provide a benchmark for outsiders looking in on the hobby.

So we have the Society for Heraldic Artists (exactly what it says on the tin) and the Heraldry Society for those who simply have an interest.

In the UK we have the Royal Photographic Society which has a membership system based on technical and artistic ability, and also a studio photogrpahers association for professional photographer (The RPS is open to anyone).

Now some people will think this is a bit staid and inappropriate but what do people think of setting one up for miniature painters (unless one already exists!)?

The way I see it such a group could assess painters/makers work and elect them to membership - say an Associate level for those who are simply interested but lack the technical expertyise, Member for those of a \"journeyman\" standard, and Fellow for those who are quite simply, amazing.

Members could use post-nominals as appropriate or be listed on the web, etc. The group could then maintain a list of those accepting commissions.

This way people new to the hobby, or those who have never used a painting service can be signposted to someone/a company that really does have expertise.

What do people think - would this sort of thing be of interest to people?

feel free to pm me or reply to this thread....

I\'ve heard this idea kicked around all the time, and I don\'t think it\'s possible. Who sets the standards? Who judges the merit\'s of others?

The voting system here causes enough gnashing of teeth I can\'t imagine when it\'s for an official credential what the bloodletting would be like.

Also if the goal is to provide some merit to the skill level of eBay sellers you can bet that people will just use the term anyway, regardless of any official declarations. If \"Class 1A Painted\" becomes the gold medal term, you can bet all sorts will throw that in their search titles.

It\'s an interesting idea, but I think with the amount of painting comps out there that saying things like \"Painted by Gold Demon winner\" and stuff like that may actually be the validation of peoples painting skills. Maybe?

Go to a world expo, you will have some of the worlds best evaluate your work.

you will also have the chance to see work from some of the worlds best.

a lot of these organisations are there to earn money. charge members to join with little vetting and the like.
i dont think we need one. experienced buyers know what to look for and inexperienced ones soon learn.
its not like having a gas fire fitted

Founder members and then the existing group.

Quite apart from the unlikeliness of this being set up and then surviving in any useful form over time, trying to be objective I think a Society\'s main usefulness to the members is probably already served, in most useful ways, by existing modelling groups and social networks. And the other major thing that Societies provide to members - accreditation - is not something that the hobby needs.

Cool - thanks for your input guys.

Like I said it was just an idea I had kicking around - if no one likes it I\'ll bin it!

I don\'t personally believe that membership of any society, group or association would provide any benefit other than ego massaging for members.

If you are offering your services for commission work and somebody likes what they see, including prices, they will pay for your work, regardless.
