Painting an hourglass?

I thought adding an hourglass to a dwarf engineer\'s base was a nice touch, but now I\'m faced with the task of painting it. Any advice for making it look good? I\'m not the best painter around, but I do a pretty good tabletop standard and I\'m always improving, so fancy or difficult techniques are welcome.

When I painted one I did it how you would paint a gem, but in two sections.
So each half had a gem effect, with reflections points on both halfs.

I would post a pic, but alas im not in the house.

*EDIT*
Check out how I painted the bottle on this pirate:

Like that but in two halfs. And I extended the reflection point around the bottle neck.
Hope that helps

That sounds like a good idea. I think that space wolves grey would probably be a proper color for an hourglass, or any light blue.

If you are feeling adventurous you could try to paint sand at the bottom of each section, similar to how people paint liquids in glass bottles.

If you look at the page for GW\'s new Empire Wizards set, the lower right one is holding an hourglass; it looks like it was painted with a SENMM-style technique:
