What success have people had with paint stripping resin models? I was going to try the simple green method on an Armorcast model...

This question has been asked again and again and again, so there\'s a huge amount of information on it in this forum. Look at the sticky thread in the Painting and Conversion section.

Ok, I\'ve had a look through those and some on other forums :innocent:. I think I will use Simple Green but has anyone else stripped an armorcast model? ???

EDIT: Ok, so the model I\'m looking at has black primer and I\'ve read Simple Green isn\'t man enough for the job. I live in the UK so alot of things people suggest isn\'t available over here what should I use?

dettol seems to be another favourite over here for stripping minis not sure about it\'s effectiveness on resin minis though

Stripping!

I think Armorcast uses/did use a poly urethane based resin. Anyways, I use EZ-Off oven cleaner (any oven cleaner that uses Lye, no \"scented\" ones) to strip my models/mini\'s, both metal and resin. Won\'t eat the resin, just don\'t leave it in for days on end. Should only take an hour or two to strip the paint. Use some type of throw a way container and give it a good foaming spray, and let sit for an hour. USING GLOVES & WATCH OUT FOR YOUR EYES, then gently scrub with an old tooth brush, and wash off. Make sure to rewash/scrub with dish soap (think you guys call it washing-up liquid :) ), and let dry! Re-prime and have fun!

So Lye is a chemical that I need to look out for. I thought all Oven cleaners were scented though.

Lye = caustic soda if you want to go to straight for the active ingredient. Be very careful how you use this stuff, follow the instructions carefully and wear rubber gloves and eye protection.

If you want to stick to oven cleaners on this side of the pond Mr. Muscle oven cleaner is the one to look for.

As mentioned, there are plenty of threads on stripping paint - a search would have given you all the info you could possibly want on the subject!

You say that but I did spend a great deal of time looking through the sticky posts and posts on other sites, I even trawled through You Tube.

Unfortunatly alot of products recomended for resin were only available in the US but thank you for recommending Mr Muscle. :)

it\'s also the shit used to give the characters in fight club their scars/chemical burns

so definately be careful using the raw stuff of sodium hydroxide

but diluted versions of it are relatively safe after all forms of lye are used to cure chinese noodles...though i wouldn\'t recommend using the stuff in oven cleaner to do this

nor using the food preperation lye on your minis...unless you plan on eating them...i also don\'t recommend this ;-p

From a thread appropriately named Found it!

yack, acetone does dissolve some resins so you\'d be much safer using something like oven cleaner (Mr. Muscle or Easy-Off, depending on where you are). Best to do a small test first though, just to be sure.

oh and more importantly ONLY use disposable plastic containers when bathing your miniatures in lye based products DON\'T use glass jars under any circumstances as it will absorb the moisture from the glass and eventually cause it to shatter (may take quite a while in solution form but better to be safe than having to pick up razor sharp pieces of glass that will burn your flesh if it comes into contact with it)

Just stripped a resin miniature, that I broke and chipped beyond a touch up.

Anyway, Dettol works, just leave it for a weekend. Then scrub with a toothbrush and more dettol.

I\'ve also used \'Fairy-Power spray\' its like Dettol but quicker (1/2 - 1 hour).

Both safe on resin and both purchased from my local Tescos! No gloves, no nasty fumes, clean mini. Cheap too!

Ah, good news! I\'ve just ordered some from the UK and have been wondering about its efficacy and toxicity. :)

Anyone wanting to use Fairy Power Spray, I\'d recommend a look at the MSDS on this page before using it without gloves.

Highlight:
Skin contact: Prolonged exposure may cause mild to moderate skin irritation.
Ingestion: Possible mild to moderate gastro-intestinal irritation with nausea and vomiting.
Inhalation: Inhaling aerosolized product may cause mild to moderate irritation of the respiratory system.

@Einion: Oh, ok. I\'ll break out the marigolds when I use it then (which I would probably have done anyway). But at least I know I don\'t need the heavy-duty gloves I got for when I used Nitromors.

I hope I\'m not going to eat or inhale it, but you never know....
