Paint Questions...

My paints have been delayed, so I am going to buy some on my own.... The problem is that I have heard 100 different people provide 101 different opinions...

What I would like to know is what paint colors from each sets (GW, Vallejo, Reaper, and P3) people like the best?

IE Metallics from GW are made of win, and the flesh tones from P3 are my preference, etc.

Can anyone do this, or am I stuck just going with one manufacturer? :)

The reason for the varied answers are that each person likes different things. Some may like the way a paint handles, others the way it blends and there are hundreds of things to like about a pot of paint. The best bet is to buy just a few colors from some of the different ranges and try them out for yourself. Keep in mind that a single pot of paint cannot be compared to the whole range. Build up your collection slowly, your wallet will thank you and you will be able to confidently add your $0.02 worth when the next persons asks this question. And they will ask! (Oh, and Vallejo Model Air metallics are really smooth!)

I'm surprised it was that few

Erk, how long do you have? If you think about it what does it matter what other random Joes think are the best, their opinions are going to be all over the place (as you already know). I realise you're trying to help shortcut the selection process but unfortunately there's some try-it-and-see involved, no way around it.

Another person's high opinion of a paint doesn't necessarily mean squat (no matter who they are or how well they paint): one dude's must-have is on another person's "Can't stand it!" list.

That's one thing I think there's a definite answer to, don't go with just one range:

Completely agree. Different ranges not only have different colours but different properties too.

I must admit that my experimentations with the new Citadel paints has been extremely positive and the dozen or so I've tried out performed the old Citadel range.

My current "favourite" paint has to be Citadel's new Balthasar Gold. It is a really nice base for golds and brasses and has been used quite a bit on my Dreadnought and Chaos Lord. I'd also not be without P3 Battlefield Brown and P3 Menoth White Base - together you can do some really nice bone & horn effects.

Is these paints worth it? Because they are not cheap!!
(I'm starting to paint and model, previously, I was just playing)
Thanks

Roughly, any of the paints made for minis will be superior for painting minis over standard craft paint. Both will work given enough time and talent, but it's easier to get results if one goes with the better product.

Compared to what? Any paint that can do the job - add colour to minis - is usable, but once you get to comparing with other brands then you have a basis for making the determination of worth it/not worth it. Some of this will come down just to price, and you're right, they're not cheap; it's long been the case that GW's paints are among the most expensive options (if not the most expensive).

Welcome to the site BTW.

I mix and match, as I find color options (especially for your primaries, as you cannot mix a true blue without other true blues, for example) most important. Avoid P3 metallics like the plague, though, just stick to GW, and some Vallejos for that.

I have recently got much more into the painting side of things and have scoured the net looking for a answer to the very same question. So after many hours spent reading endless reviews I'll offer you this gem of wisdom. Buy a few different ones and try them. Prob not what you wanted to hear but it seems there is no definative answer to the question. Personally I have found i really like the Vallejo Model air and the VMC but I also have a selection of washes and metallics from GW and have also invested in a W&N ink set to give these a try.
Experiment and find what is good for you.
Sorry if that dont seem to helpful but nothing beats first hand experience.
Be interesting to hear what you go for in the end and compare your thoughts to mine, noob to noob :)
