P3 Primer?

Has anyone tried the P3 Primer yet? If so how does it compare to either GW or Armoury?

I need white primer for the weekend and my LGS doesn\'t carry Armoury. Ordering would take too long since it can only be ground shipped. I also refuse to pay $15 for a can of GW primer (that\'s short of robbery).

let me be the first to say that this primer rocks!!!

i hate armoury, even though it\'s cheap...
i had too much trouble with it rubbin\' off while i paint...
it didn\'t seem to like humidity at all, either...

i like GW primer, but it rubs off too much for the price...

P3 goes on smooth as hell...
it sprays in a fan instead of a cone, which is wierd at first...
it covers beautifully, and doesn\'t seem to rub of at all!!!
at $10 bucks, i think it\'s a great deal, considerin\' how well it performs...

cheers

comparing what???

it\'s black...
Gw is black...
armoury is grey...
i don\'t use white primer...

P3 more or less looks like GW, but a bit more satin...
i end up layin\' on a layer of Thamar black from P3 or Chaos black from GW, depending what is on hand at the time...
there are always a few nooks and crannies that don\'t get primed...

cheers

Best primer on the market. It goes on much smoother than the GW ones, as the nozzle on the can diffuses the paint a lot better which results in beter coverage, I\'ve noticed that you have to hold these a little closer when spraying than the GW ones though, as super fine particles dry faster in the air and become overspray.

It puzzles me why people would spend money on specific game companies primer when it\'s so overpriced.

Halfords primer works wonders (uk) for half the price.

Duplicolor is a fantastic primier (us) for half the price.

You could buy a mini with the change;)

Sadly some people buy the brand name rather than the product.

Since I have run out of my Walmart brand black primer, I will try your suggestion of Duplicolor.

For primer I\'ve always used GW skull white and GW Chaos Black.

I\'ve never used a specific Primer. So my question is.
What advantages would I see from using Primer, and what disadvantages have I being suffering from using Skull White and Chaos Black??

Sorry not many examples in my gallery loaded as yet for reference. Just posting my most recent jobs for now.

Spray primers are more hard wearing, they stick to the metal well and provide a better surface for painting on. Basically I would always use a spray undercoat.
Note it doesn\'t need to be particularly thick, or cover the whole mini, the main thing is to cover the most exposed parts, often a light spray is enough, then you can go over this with normal acrylic black or white to get the bits missed by the spray.

I\'ll add some primer to my shopping list tomorrow.

Was undercoating last night. and brought back memories of having to use a few coats to get a nice even coat.

So with primer it should be easier to get a good undercoat without having to reapply?

Yep. If you\'re in the US another brand to try is Painter\'s Touch from Rustoleum.

After years of paying for GW and Armory primers... both with mixed results (one can to another was just too inconsistant for my likings), I finally started shopping around. The results?

As fluffy said, Duplicolor Sandable Primer which is available at many U.S. retailers is a great product. I use their Gray Hot Rod Primer for anything that I used to use a black primer for. Smooth coverage. slightly satin finish. Great coverage. NEVER any overspray problems. Lasts long, and paint sticks like a champ. I\'ve even used this primer on flexible plastic models like those found in Descent or Last Night On Earth and it still stays on the model well.

Another great find is Rust-Oleum Automobile Primer. Most automotive stores in the U.S. (Kragen, Autozone, etc.) carry it, and again this one has all the benefits of the primer listed above. One thing I like about the Rust-Oleum is it\'s totally matte.

Both of these brand run right around $3 per large 12oz. can. A steal of deal compared to GW, P3, and Armoury. Also, I live in an area with extreme temperature fluctuations. Rust-Oleum and Duplicolor have never shown any signs of trouble with the temperature. I have even tried the spray on highlight effects (primer black then mist with white from above to set your highlight surfaces) with these cans and had excellent results.

To sum up. Lower cost, better more consistant results, and they\'re always in stock at multiple stores. I can\'t imagine ever going back to game company primers. If you are skeptical, go buy a can for $3 and if you don\'t like it... you\'re out only $3. But I believe that once you try these out, you\'ll be pleasently suprised at the results and money you\'ve saved.
;)
pez Out.

P.S. Not to sound like a jerk or anything, but look at the kind of results fluffy and Einion are getting using these products. Seriously, how can you argue with that!?

P3 Primers

I haven\'t tried them yet, but an excellent undercoat/primer to use is... (gasp) Wal-mart brand flat black/white and their gray primer. They use to have oxide red primer, but they don\'t carry it anymore (was great for Skaven).
The black & white paint goes on thin and smooth with great coverage, and doesn\'t clog detail. It drys fast and doesn\'t rub off easily while handling it. I use it for all my plastic models and most of my metal models. All the paints I use stick very well to it (GW, P3, Reaper, etc). When done painting use a dull coat like Testor\'s or Army Painter (both excellent). If the minis are used for gaming, dull coat, then gloss coat, then dull coat again for maximum durability. Remember light coats, and use clear acrylic for the gloss, not lacquer so it won\'t yellow with age. :bouncy:

Thanks for all the great replies everyone.

I actually ended up getting the Wal-Mart one (just needed the white for now) and it works wonderfully well. I ended up paying $1.02 US for a can the size of GW primer which is about $15 US depending where you buy it. I was very skeptical about the Wal-Mart stuff but tried it immediately after getting home. Covers extremely well, dries very smooth and quickly. It\'s just as good if not better than GW stuff and much, much cheaper.

@3dken - I generally just use Testor\'s Dull Cote as a sealant on most of my models. Few thin coats of that and it usually dose the trick.

Black is a little fickle form Walmart, and grey is great.

Color Place, made for Walmart by the same people that make Kilz paint, sadly has discontinued their Red Oxide Primer, but I am tracking it down to find out where to get it in spray form again from the makers.

Avoid all the Walmart gloss colors, unless you want to have to wait long drying times, and very potent fumes even after dry. The amount of toulene in the gloss is outrageous! The gloss is good for outdoor projects though.

(Sorry if this is threadomancing, but I wanted to vouch for the quality of P3\'s primer.)

I\'ve never used Armoury, but I prefer it to GW\'s as it goes on very smooth and thin, no obscuring of detail. My only complaint is that it often feels (esp. with the white primer) that it suffers more from humidity than a \"thicker\" primer does (I live in Kansas City).

I should say that friends who are much better painters than me don\'t like how smooth it dries - I guess they feel it\'s too smooth to really \"grab\" paint. I believe they prefer GW or Krylon.

I will say, being a Duplicolor user, I am convinced that Privateer is either rebranding their paint or making the exact same formula under license. Not only do P3 and Duplicolor behave exactly the same way, but even their cans are physically identical (albeit the P3 labels are much prettier :) ).

If they are indeed using Duplicolor as I suspect, the quality and consistency should be high. On the other hand, if you have access to Duplicolor, you can usually get it for around half the price (I buy mine at a local Autozone car parts store).
