OTT-LITE is it worth it?

I was thinking of getting one of these but I decided to get a couple of 32w (160w) low energy bulbs instead. They have a colour temp of 5000k which should make them pretty ok for photography as they are white.... only £14.00 too. They should arrive tomorrow so we\'ll see

I have one on my desk that is adjustable.
It is definately worth the price.
It is true that the light diffuses rather quickly (meaning it won\'t light a room) but since I only use it at my desk it is fine.
And the arm can adjust so that I can see what the light source highlights are from whichever angle I like. Really good for OSL.
Not to mention that the bulb has lasted 4 1/2 years now of almost daily use...I have a spare still in the package.
So if you can afford it, and want \"true\" color, go for it.
But be sure you can get it within 1-3 feet of the area you need lighting. The closer the better.

I use regular clip lamps I got at Wally world and a magnifying light with a swing arm that I use for photos all fitted with true light bulbs in them. These give natural range of color but the regular ones burn out fairly fast. They don\'t cost a lot, though.
For painting I use the magnifying lamp and a 2 lamp desk lamp I use the same bulbs in.

I find you get way more clean white light from 2 GE reveal light bulbs than any 3 ott lights combined can provide.

I agree..I paid like 45 bucks for mine..and the thing isn\'t bright enough especially when I paint at night. I have 3 lights on my desk and during night painting I usually get frustrated. I\'d ask for some new table lights for christmas..but I\'m already getting a Remington 870 12 guage.

I have just the one table lamp and I only use it to light what I\'m working on.

Are you into competition quality figures? Then, yes, it is . Especially if you can get one cheap.
After I saw a few of my figures under an OTT light at Gencon some years back, I was shocked. I knew I sucked...but that bad?
So I hunted on ebay for a good deal on an OTT lite. Rather than shell out $170 Canadian I spent $42US for the same model, including the shipping, on ebay. I saved enough $$ that I also installed a 4\' long flourescent fixture above my workdesk with twin bulbs that have a similar temperature as the OTT.
The 4\' flourescent is my main light and I think the fixture was about $30 and the light bulbs about $15. It hangs from a couple of chains attached to the celing and plugs into the wall. Not beautiful decor-wise, but excellent work lighting.See the setup here
I still turn on the OTT when I\'m finishing up a figure and checking to see if it needs fixing.
I also will take a model outside in the sun to have a once over too. Checking your figure out in various lights really helps.
Just my 2cents.

I have a 13watt OTT flex arm light. I would get another one if I could find one at the price I got this one for - a steal on ebay.
The 13 watt is not enough light to paint by. A second lamp is needed on the other side anyway to kill the shadows.
Staples now sells a line of truer (no light gives true sunlight) light lamps for about half the price of the ott. When I get my table set back up, I\'m getting one of them too.
And the vison max 18 watt bulb screws into a standard base:

I own an ott desk-top model and have been pretty happy with it, but I\'ve considered getting some complex fluorescents for painting at work (or a second light source at home.) I\'ll post here if I notice a significant difference between the ott and cf bulbs.
Q: is there a real difference between the \"true color\" cf and a normal cf bulb? I can get regular cf bulbs at the dollar store now, so I\'m not sure what to get.
