OSL Gandalf

I did this Gandalf fig for the Toronto golden demon. It was my first real attempt at OSL & I\'m really pleased with how he came out.
He got through to the final selection, but didn\'t place.

Good solid piece of work.

The score is probably hurt by the pictures, they need to be bigger and clearer. A solid 7.5 for me, maybe more. It could be improved with clearer \'hot spots\' and warmer tones.

man its hard to get osl spot on, isn\'t it? well for me, this is a nice job, clean subtle light that suits LotR well. If i were to offer suggestion for improvement, it would be to work on the consistency across the piece. What I mean is that you need to really imagine the light source, and differentiate a little more consistently as you move away from it. The difference in lighting on the grey robes for instance, is much more subtle (and imho better) than on the staff, which is pretty stark. Look at where the shadows would be cast and paint them on, e.g. under the hand holding the staff it would be very dark for a little bit before picking up more ambient light again. On the same note, the back of his robes have to be differentiated more from the front, or the effect is lost somewhat.

great attempt though, clean up the top of the staff and the beard with some more definition, and you\'ll have a superb model there.

hope that helps matey :)

I remember seeing this one in the display cases. The lighting effect was pretty convincing. Like others have mentioned it would look even better if you were to make the back of the model a little darker than the front. I find that if you take a flashlight or a lamp and light the model from the same direction as the light source and take a couple pictures (without flash) from different angles you can see were the shadows should be strongest.

I think the basing lets it down a bit, both on the models base and the display base. I see that you were attempting a marbled effect on the display base, and it looks pretty good, but I think it could have been a little better. Having never tried to paint a marbled effect I can\'t really say how to improve it though... I think there is at least one tutorial/article in the article section here on CMON. As for the models base I think all you really need to do there would be to get a little bit of finer sand to fill in the gaps between the larger ones already on the base.

All in all though it was done very well. It looked a little better in person, but still not bad at all in these photos. Nice work.

I agree the base is a little bland. The stones that are there, I did highlight according to the light source, but it\'s very subtle. They\'re relatively far from the light (which i wanted to keep local to enhance the effect) so I didn\'t highlight them a lot.

I\'m busy with a few other things at the moment, but definitely want to try more OSL.

yeah man i will deffinatly say it looks good, and it looked good in person. what will help you is two things, one; a better mini, there are so many better gandalf minis, and second the base thing, it would have been better if he was just on likt a rock or somthing, it looks odd on the piller. you need to present your mini well for it to do well in golden demon :)
