Orkemedes Ground Breaking New Invention!!!

Right.. so I may as well start this off with a disclaimer that this is a project that realistically should have never started, but it did, and now we cannot stop.

So Jericho and I are in a gaming club up in edmonton and we are running a table at a local event. So we decided to do a return to the third war of armageddon for our theme, as I have orks and he has salamanders. We came to the conclusion that for our table to actually draw people in to play on, let alone consider joining our club, we needed something special to \"stand out\".

In the middle of a laughing fit, dan suggested we do a machine similar to the foot clans underground tunnelers(yes from ninja turtles...) for the orks to use. I am not sure if he actually meant this as a serious suggestion, but after much giggling we some how decided that it was our mission to complete this project. Our biggest setback at this point, is that by then it was after 6:00 on a holiday monday and everything hobby/hardware related was already closed. This is where things got silly.

The basis for this model is a Pringles tin and a funnel found in a supermarket, the rest is bitz I had lying around at home and plasticard.

On day two we added the plaster and slate, and weill be sanding and adding more rivets tomorow. after that it should just be painting the darn thing...

Anyways.. bare with me on the pictures.. I tried a backdrop but it was far too small, and it is getting late.......

should have some more progress photos up tomorow night as well... then we get to paint it!

What do you guys think?

Looks like you have some really good thing going, looks almost finished to me actually. I have a couple of small suggestiond: put something on the \"head\" that would look as if it grinded/moved dirt when the whole thing rotates - something in addition to the chainsaw looking bits. I would also add a lot of rough repair work on the body, steelplates, wood as well for breaking up those big flat pringles-areas :D as for looks.
waiting for the next update..........

Dammit Tom I even showed you the perfect angle for a photo and you didn\'t use it, looks like I have to do everything myself ;) :p

Just kidding! Although I will be heading over there shortly to hopefully get this guy ready for paint. I agree with you Manus that it needs a few small bits here and there, I wasn\'t sure what to do with the nose but definitely something on the sides. Some metal glyph bitz should work.

<-- First post in weeks, I knew tearing up my shoulder at work was a bad idea... ;)

Alright, so after sanding, adding more rivets and some glyphs, the model is now primed and ready to go.

Here it is in all its glory!

So with assmebly out of the way, the questions now turn to how to paint this monstrosity.

any ideas?

I had a couple minutes to think on the way home, and to elaborate on our non-public discussions I think this beast needs a Warmachine style palette not a GW one if you know what I mean. The colors themselves are up to debate but the style of subtlety and weathering isn\'t something that will readily be taken from Eavy Metal sources.

This is Deathskull Klan in the end, so probably something involving blue... I\'m thinking an approximate Ultramarine Blue base (perhaps tinted with my patented 2:1 Scorched Brown and Black mix) shaded with more Scorched/Black and with subtle contour-enhancing hilights with maybe grey or khaki mixed in.

And then get Fluffy to weather it. That sould do it.

I will get right on repainting my entire ork army to match it!

My only problem with switching styles for the vehicle is that the skin that i do will not work any more. I feel it will pull it away from the rest of the army that it is going to be fielded with.

So any suggestions for upgrading the drill on the front? I was having a helluva time coming up with ideas for how to represent any working parts on there :p

FYI there were also several debates between having a stylish Orky vehicle and having a vehicle that would actually function in the real world... for example I was insisting that track guards would look good and be an extremely good idea because the top of the treads would be moving the wrong way, and underground that could slow the thing down. But hey, Orks wouldn\'t think of that would they ;)

maybe a .....insert correct english word.....something like a spiraling edge from top to bottom, so it looks like the whole top rotates, sorry don\'t know what its called. Or any thing that looks rotating would go

IT doesnt necessarily have to be a screw style head. Some actual machine like that use a grinder style head with several rings that spin in opposite directions to grind up the rock as it moves. Or you could, I s\'pose, inset some meltaguns and have it melt its way about. That would give you a great excuse to use a lava effect;)

ok, well realistically it is equiped with a zzap gun so, that could be used to \"explain\" how it works.. My end of the argument was that realism/ practicality are two words that do not exist to orks, yet their contraptions still work, as far a rubble on the drill, there is sand and some plaster for muck that will show up better once painted.

My biggest question to you guys, is what base colour would you use for sand? Dan votes Dessert yellow, I vote vermin brown.. any thoughts?

I say Desert Yellow or another of Citadel\'s \"earthy\" browns because it looks like arse when you try to take a dark brown up to bone or higher on bases. Some of the Foundation paints might work for this as well.

I\'m seriously impressed. The whole thing look as though it could actually exist. Definitely ad some debris to the nose cone though.

Hey Tom you been busy on this guy lately? Or has being a productive member of society (finally) been too much for you ;)

A mix of work/migraines/ house sitting for my parents has kept me from working on it, and just when i sat down to do it, i realised i was out of aribrush cleaner. I am going to pick some up from work on thursday, and hopefully sit down with it that night to get some base coats on, and possibly see where that takes me. Brian and myself are also going to start on the scenery soon and at some point i need to paint up more boys. All in all, I am swamped.. here is hoping it gets done sooner than later...

Here\'s hoping :D Hopefully those old Orks I gave you help a little. I might do some painting Thursday night w/ Ron, but I need to clean up first I guess. I\'ll give you a call if we need a third lol
