Order Of Painting

Hey, ill keep it quick,

What order do you paint in?

For example, Base, Metallics, Cloth....etc

i was just wondering as some of the models i am painting now are more complex and i was wondering if there was a quick effective way of painting. ...I hate cleaning up mistakes :p

Cheers

I think this varies with the painter, and even with the figurine.

For myself, it varies by the figurine.
My current WIP, I started with the cloak, then worked from the nooks and crannies outward, to minimize smudging and smearing.

I paint like I would get dressed. That is skin bottom layer of clothing etc. Works most of the time for me.
And I always do the face first now as it gives me incentive to finish the mini.

I paint all the midtones, then all highlights then all shadows and I prefer to start with the largest areas of the figure first, so that I feel like I\'m getting somewhere. After that\'s done I\'ll paint the details and do any additional fine tuning.

Base coats and shading washes first. Not necessarily from the inside out, since I find it easier to paint inside the lines when I\'ve got ridges to work towards. I\'d rather make the mistakes when I\'m not painting anywhere near surfaces I\'ve already blended and highlighted.

Once base coats are done, I start with highlighting whatever piece of the mini appeals to me the most at the time.

For me it depends. Generally speaking people paint outwards (skin first if there is any, then clothing, then belts etc.) and I do this sometimes but if there are boots or shoes I often paint those first, just a habit I\'ve gotten into. For historical subjects I often paint the face at the end and the eyes very last thing before glossing them and then adding semi-gloss finishes to leather, painted surfaces, for sweat etc.

As mentioned if there are deep recesses in the casting it\'s almost always a good idea to do them first.

I\'m a skin outwards person - but then painting skin is my favorite part of the figure :D

usually the biggest (either cloak, armour, sometimes skin) part first, then onto smaller and smaller details, the face is usually the last thing, as regards colors : darkest shade first, then highlight up from there:)

face first for me - then any metallics because there\'s nothing worse than getting the metallic on something that\'s finished, because even if you wash it off right away you always get the \'bits\' left behind.... then I work from the inside out

I usually start with the face since I consider at least a decent face the make-or-break point of any figure. That way I can easily start over if I\'m not happy with it.

Second, those hard to reach places where at least I cannot get any paint without putting some of it in the wrong place. Then I generally do dark colors since I find touching up light colors that accidentally got in the wrong place easier than vice versa.

Boy, you can really tell that I\'m not a very neat painter from this post...lol

deep recess to outward surfaces

That, unless its got lots of metallics in which case they get done first usually, also small details tend to be left to last (or left out entirely, never can tell with me thats just the sort of crazy guy I am :) )

For the most part I do like ogrebane/tab, etc. However there are times when I do like the above. Usually when I\'m trying to figure out a color scheme for something complex. Although usually I don\'t like it that much for the sole reason that when I get done doing the midtone/basecoat all over, the mini reminds me of how I used to paint when I started, and I feel like I regressed in ability...before I remember I not done yet ;)

I\'ve got a terrible lack of discipline and organisation. I paint differently each time. But, it works for me (mostly)... :D

Ah yes, forgot about them. I\'ll often do larger areas of metallics early on too, if they\'ll require drybrushing or something like it that is inherently untidy.
