Opinions anyone, before submitting?

Hi Guys,

Finally got round to painting something for myself.

A couple of firsts here:

My first Pegaso model (absolutely lovely to assemble and to paint)

and my first SENMM

Any suggestions before I take a better photo for submitting? I\'ve deliberately taken a large close-up pic so you can see all the faults :D

Looks good. A straighter line between the SE? And a softer transition between the colours maybe. The face and eyes could do with some work - it\'s the focal point of the model and is given more emphasis by the framing with the arm and sword.

The armour is excellent:)

Compliments indeed, thanks for looking it over.

The SE was a bit of a sod actually, no problems getting the colours right but the katana is surprisingly thin and tricky to get a straight line on.

I\'ll sort that out on Monday along with the face & eyes.

Cheers again

Hi Colin:
Love the armour work on that figure.
I must agree with Spacemunkie on the face, I believe that needs a little bit more work to smooth out.

However the Katana, I\'m sorry but that doesn\'t work for me.
I\'ve spent a fair old amount of time drooling over the Blades in the cabinets at Leeds Royal Armouries and they aren\'t reflective to that degree.
I\'d agree that the blade would work with standard NMM showing the swordsmith\'s folding line (Hansen Hansu something like that? ). HAMON ...Who\'s having a memory failure?

Anyhow that\'s just my opinion, shoot me out of the water if you want. ;) :)

Thanks Mike, I have to agree on the katana, they\'re not polished to that degree all over. I have one on my wall and the more I look at it the more difficult it looks to get right on the mini.

The upper (sharp) edge alone would work great with senmm while the lower edge would not be so bright.

Here\'s the big question. Would nmm & senmm work together on the same weapon? I thought no so went for senmm all over especially as on the mini the blade is only about 3mm thick from lower to upper edge. What do you reckon?

Colin: Here\'s a couple of Pics which might help.

As you can see the bottom image has a slight reflective quality while the top \"Katana\" is closer to the real thing.
Either way I\'m thinking that the blade is going to need a \"Hotspot\" somewhere on it.

Mike, what type of sword is the second one (the straight blade)? Japanese swords are curved like the first one, aren\'t they (except for the ninjas\' swords)?

Is the \"face\" supposed to be his actual face, or the scary helmet mask that samurai sometimes wore? That makes a difference how you\'d paint it. They were black or red lacquered, or could be other colours I guess. The rest of the figure looks great but the face/mask definitelty needs to be re-done IMO.

@DR: Mike, that\'s a new term on me, what do you mean by a \'hotspot\'? Is that the most reflective part where I\'d need to paint a glare effect?

@Ritual: Looking at it, it looks like a ninjato, the ninja could not afford or produce the folded steel of the Samurai katana so opted for a straight blade which could be produced quickly and (relatively) economically

@NSA: It\'s his actual face. Each time I\'ve looked at the mini I\'ve thought the face needs more contrast. Having not painted an asian face before I was concentrating so much on the fleshtone that I ballsed the contrast :D

Exactly. Hotspot or Flare would be the brightest point on the sword.
The only example I have ever done anywhere near it is the Seraphim sister in my gallery. D\'oh, I\'ve forgotten the number, sorry!

Yes that sword is sold under a description of Stealth Ninja.

Colin: why not try washing in very thin coat of the mid-range colour over the dark area.
This might help to bring the contrast down a little and allow you to work up the highlights afterwards.

Revision

I\'ve killed the flash on this one as it was obscuring the detail & making the face look grainy.

Sword: better blend, hotspot added & SE line straightened

Face: Redone entirely & stronger pupils added to eyes.

Only trouble with killing the flash is the colour depth isn\'t so good. Can\'t win!!! lol

No flash but detail better:

I\'d still be tempted to use a greyer earth tone for the SE on the blade... But he is looking very good!

Think about gloss varnishing his lacquered armour too, as at that sort of scale it really helps with the realism. Although Trace has more experience of this sort of thing than me ;)

He might need a bit of weathering on his feet as he seems to be walking through quite muddy terrain

Very cool! I have one to do in the new year too... 120mm pegaso samurai archer... rather daunting to say the least!
