Not for minis. I work with oils on canvas. I\'ve seen them used on larger figures, like 180mm+ though.

I suppose if I really wanted to concentrate on blending I could try using oils on minis. The big problem that I see is the drying time. I don\'t really care to wait longer than a day to seal a figure and oils can take months to dry completely.

ur not alone in the oil painting universe

i\'ve recently done some experiments with using oils, and to my surprise, found it to be a friendlier and cheaper medium than acrylics. i still use the faster drying acrylics for base colors though. oils give more flexibility in blending and mixing colors just make sure that you\'ve got a fixative varnish after painting or u\'ll rub off your work.

Oil paint (or enamel) is fantastic for blending, and most miniaturists that paint larger scales (54mm+) tend to use oil paint for skin and acrylic for everything else.

Check out artist Craig Whitaker\'s fantastic german trooper in the chapter index of my online guide to see what I mean (link in sig).

So your not alone, but most people like the quick drying acrylics for painting things that don\'t need to be blended and oil for things that do.

oil paints

I would like to start using oils, don\'t know much about the proper method to go about it though. I have been reading books but need to just start in.

Oil Paints

I use oils quite often straight from the tube..as washes over acrylics and as a staining technique..where I put it on and then remove it with mineral spirits..creating highlight..most of miniatures I have posted here on cmon are done to some degree with oils..some more than others
