Ogre WIP

Hello everyone. I have been browsing these forums for quite some time now, and as such found that it was time to write my own WIP thread as i finally got hold of a cam. (Disclaimer: Found that my cam wasnt super, so i am very sorry for the low quality pics)

I started a Ogre Kingdom army allmost a year ago, but work has been slow. Its painted in the colours of Khorne. Here is some pics of what i got so far. I know my style is very cartoony, but thats the way i have developed my painting skills, and as such im trying to pick up tips to also be ale to paint less crisp when needed. Tell me what you think.

And for my current project, Ogre Rhinox Thundrlord from Forgeworld. What do you think of the skin and fur? I went with a blend of grey/dark brown at the start, then going through earth and down to bone for the skin, as for the fur, its dark brown/grey blended through grey and down to bone. I think it looks pretty ok myself, but maby too crisp and clean, if so any tips on how to dirty it up a bit?

The pic shows maby 1/3 of the highlights compared to when you look at the model.

Geif better cam!

 I really like the banners, your style is very cool. The ogre himself looks a little flat, but as you say the pictures arent showing it quite right. Look forward to seeing more.

Looking really nice mate, good that you took the time to do the eyes, lots of people are too lazy to even contemplate it

Really like the banners and the rhinox skin seems to be coming along well. Get some more pics of the rest of \'em! :)

Cheers,
Tom

Honestly I think the key to being less crisp in your painting is probably watered down paint. I know you probably hear that way too much online (I know I do!) but it\'s a good way to get smoother transitions.

Lately I\'ve been using a lot more washes than before, so for example on cloth I would paint the whole thing a middle color, mix in some Scorched Brown or Black or whatever for a shade, add in tons of water (but enough to still have solid control over where it goes) and carefully try to work it into the shadows. Then I mix in more of the dark color, more water, and do it again. Finally clean up the main color and add a few hilights.

Doing very rigid Scab Red, Red Gore, Mix in Orange, etc. isn\'t the way to get a smooth progression. I used to do a ton of layering, watered down to avoid getting lumpy results, and honestly I found I can get the same if not better results by doing less layers with more watery paints. With practise you can blur the edges between shades/hilights to make one layer look like a lot of careful layers.

Some great work I see there, thanks for the pics :)

I can see some places where Jericho means, such as on the bandages on the last pic, but overall as an army I\'d say that it is great! I really like the idea of using chaos shields for armour, and the bases seem to be good too. I do have some suggestions you could bear in mind though. First of all, I personally think the silver metallics are too clean and need some dirtying up. Secondly, neaten up the base edges, I can see a few spots of paint on them ;) And thirdly...paint some more! :p

Look foward to see some more progress on the army, maybe turn this into an army blog/wip thingymajig? ;)

Cheers,
Tom

You know I really have to say that your crisp cartoony style is very refreshing, but if you really do want to get some smoother blends where you need them Jericho has hit the nail on the head. A few really watered down layers can go a lot further than a bunch of really carefull less thinned layers. It takes time to get used to it but it really does work great. Washes are also great for it. I tend to use a midtone when I\'m smoothing out transitions, it\'ll help to blend the layers together a little more (but sometimes you\'ll need to reapply the highlights after).

Have some progress on my Rhinox. allmost finished the head. I dont realy know if i think the brown => grey transition on the horns came out sweet or a bit odd looking. So please comment.

Ye and the light is the pics are horrible, sorry.

The transition itself is great, I\'m just wondering if the brown looks too close to the flesh color or not. It looks like the horns are calcified skin and not bone/keratin (random fact: Rhino horns are closer to hair than bone).

So yeah the transition itself is smooth and pretty, but maybe the base color could\'ve been further from the skin color? Overall looking very good though. Should be a fabulous army.

Thanks for replying Jericho. I can perfectly see what you meen, but im very reluctant to do major changes to it. If i were to use a cople of more glazes on the horns, what colors should i aim for? Go whiter and more crisp, or more dark bluish gray maby? If im going towards bone, the yellow in it will make even less contrast between skin and horns.
