After... well, about two years, I finally got around to finishing this guy.
Alas, it's a little rushed. I had to finish him for a painting competition in a couple of days and I had only done the steel and yellow areas, with the brass, flesh and details to go.
I didn't get the highlighting on the black, the marine helmet or the glyphs done untill after the comp though.
The yellow, particularly on the shoulder pads is appalling. It went clumpy and rough and the technique was something of an experiment that pretty much failed.
The skin is Orc Hide Shade, followed by blending up with Catachan Green, followed by blending up with Goblin Green, a final blend of Bleached Bone, a glaze of Catachan green to bring everything together and a very thin wash of Thrakka Green.
The scarring (and tongue) is Snot green on the Orc Hide base, with a Scorpion highlight and again a thin Thrakka wash.
The black is highlighted with a blending up of Codex Grey (which is very hard to see on the pictures), followed by a heavy glaze of a Vallejo Black Glaze.
This was done far too quickly, and even with the glaze is sketchy and uneven.
The sword was a Midnight Blue base, blended up with Regal, Enchanted and Ice Blues with a final Skull White highlight. I then painted Black over the top to get the cracked effect. The idea being that the sword's surface constantly blackens and flakes off revealing the blue underneath.
The blending was too 'long' however, with the lighter colours (and thus showing off the cracks) coming too far down the sword, making it hard too see.
Brass areas are a simple Tin Bitz, Shining Gold, Burnished Gold followed by Gryphonne Sepia.
Metal is the ubiquitous Boltgun Metal, Badab Black, Boltgun Metal and Mithril Silver.
Gryphonne Sepia and a Vallejo Smoke were used to create rust/grease in various areas.
Marine helmet was based with Ice Blue and blended up with Skull White. I wanted something that would contrast with the rest of the model. Blue was on the sword, yellow on the armour, black on the armour, green on the skin and red wouldn't bring out the blood, so I went with a smurf vet. helmet.
Blood is Tamiya Clear Red.
The glyphs were painted in a subtle mix of frustration, shouting, anger and despair. My free-hand needs a lot of work.
On the subject of the build itself, the base was the Ghazghul Thrakka model. The original leans forward a lot, so I added a layer in the middle to bring him upright. Not much is left of the left arm, with the power klaw removed and swapped for the Ork Warboss Choppa forearm/hand. The sword is plasticard. The back pack is from a baneblade variant (I think), the gun is from a Sentinel with an assortment of bits and plasticard rods. Shoulder pads are plasticard.
I'm currently planning the next version, I will probably integrate the gun into the arm more. This one is quite large and the wrist-mounted effect makes the whole model a little lop-sided, detracting from the sword arm.
