Ok im just getting back into this again and just wondering how u guys/gals decide what colours to use for shadows/highlights.

Im fine with picking base colours but never know how dark/light to take them for the shading.

I know im a noob, LOL

any suggestions would be appreciated

Depends on a lot of things. I often use a dark brown or a dark grey for shading as I usually aim for a muted, natural looking result. I only use black for colours that are allready dark in themselves.

Quite often I mix a bit of the complementary colour to the base coat into my shading mix so that the shadows will become less vivid than the base colour. It looks wrong to me if the shaded areas look equally saturated as the non-shaded ares, or worse, even more saturated.

with shading, try adding a little blue or a colour on the opposite side of the colou chart. when highlighting, don\'t use white, use a yellowish off white. this will keep your colour rich

cheers for that thoughts
i spose it all depends on the overall effect you are looking for.

will have to muse on it a bit, but since my current project has quite a cartoony feel to it, maybe a more vibrant colour scheme would suit it better
