Nibbles special rule question

When using Nibbles' special ability, when he kills an enemy, does Nibbles heal his wounds before of after the enemy gets his retaliation attack?

I don't consider the enemy dead until after he gets done attacking me.

I suppose that makes sense!

It makes sense to do it like this otherwise Nibbles could be almost invulnerable.
