Newbie Questions

Hi there, new to the site, enjoying what I see so far, and of course I\'m bursting with questions.... so if no one minds, I\'ll rattle a few off (with some comments) and feel free to answer if you wish.

1) Is there a forum or another site where you can get your miniature identified? I haven\'t taken any pictures of any yet, but I have a lot of 70\'s and 80\'s Ral Partha / Grenadier kicking around that should come out decent when finished, but I wouldn\'t know what to call them. One of the features I like the most about this site is to type in the name of a Reaper miniature and have some wonderful photos come up that inspire lots of ideas... now if I could only find the time...

1.5) Should I just dump everything from that era and stick with current stuff? (that I think is sculpted superior... especially compared to 70\'s stuff I have)

2) I\'ve looked (I think) fairly well in the discussions of equipment and am wondering what people use (if anything at all) for magnification purposes. I\'ve looked at things such as magnifying lamps (you know, the kind with the circular fluorescent tube and the magnifying glass in the middle). I know enough that natural light is superior when painting, but does anyone use magnification?

Wow, only 2.5 questions. I know I had a lot more, but I guess it\'s getting late here. I\'ll remember some day...

Welcome to the boards! Just to warn you, some people may post replies that sound crazy, but for they\'re really okay - for the most part. Well, some of them are. Some are a little....strange (looking at you dauber).

Okay, answers (sort of):

1) Not that I know of. Someone recently mentioned that it might be nice to have some kind \"Google for miniatures\", but given the literally thousands of sculpts out there, it might be difficult to pull off. Folks here seem to really know their minis, so posting a pic or two might help you get them identified.

1.5) If you\'ve got them, you might as well paint them. Sure, they may not be the best sculpts, but they could make for some great practice.

2) Some use magnification and some don\'t. For those that do, some use an optivisor, some use reading glasses and some use soldering stands (my preference). I suppose as long as it\'s something that you\'re comfortable with and can work with/around, it doesn\'t really matter.

Hi and welcome! :)

1. Photograph the minis and post them in a thread here. There\'s plenty of people who have been around since the early days who can help identify your minis.

1.5. No, if you want to paint the stuff then paint it. Old-school minis tend to get lower scores because the sculpts themselves aren\'t as good as today\'s standards, but who cares?

2. There are some people who use magnifiers. There\'s been a few threads about those, so if you do a forum search on magnifiers you should find them. I think, but I\'m not sure since I don\'t use any myself, that people favour the type of magnifying goggles you strap round your head over the magnifying lamp.

1) Stuff of Legends is rather good for identifying minis:
http://www.solegends.com/

Plus they will gladly take pics of your old minis for items they have no pictures of.

1.5) why buy new ones when you have old ens to paint. It\'s true about the scores though, but there are enough things on here that score badly (minis without OSL, minis using Metalics, Minis not made by Rackham or GW). Paint what you want to paint.

2) I use a desk lamp with 2 halogen bulbs on each side of a large magnifying glass. Picked it up at Wal-Mar for under 20CDN, couldn\'t tell you the brand though.
